It's official! The ESPN.com NFL power rankings will be released Tuesday, according to sources close to the Beast. Do whatever it takes to prepare your hearts and minds for this special day. My rankings were due this past Monday, which means I'm hoping to finalize them by tomorrow. I've attempted to find a way to put all four teams in the top 10, but it's not going to happen.
I even hired the best numbers guys I know (Football Outsiders) to come up with a formula for my offseason rankings. At this very minute, Aaron Schatz and Billy Barnwell are holed up in a dimly lit office somewhere in the Midwest cranking out projections for me to review. If I had to submit my list right now, the Giants and Eagles would be locks for the top 10. After seeing Wade Phillips' new fiery approach in person Tuesday, I have the Cowboys knocking on the door of the top 10. And I know Peter King ranked the Commanders No. 23 -- and laughed out loud about it -- but I see them skewing a bit higher than that. In fact, No. 14 sounds about right to me.
If you would like the opportunity to influence my vote, I've set up an offshore account (just kidding) in Nevis, the West Indies. Now's the time to make your passionate arguments regarding the most important non-important thing we do at ESPN.
And I'll be getting back to you with details on Tuesday's release party in the Uptown section of Dallas. I've already lined up appearances by popular (wink, wink) ESPN personalities Ed Werder, Tim Cowlishaw and Marc Stein.
Join us for this special (if not sacred) event.
