Buzzmaster (12:08 PM)
Matt is running a few minutes late. He'll be here shortly!
J.R. ((Dallas, TX))
Do you think Pat Watkins has been a suprise thus far?
Mosley (12:17 PM)
Thanks for your patience. Looks like we have a big crowd today. Watkins has always been a pretty solid special teams player. Looks like he's made a major leap in his coverage.
J.R. ((Dallas, TX))
Will the Cowboys / Giants game draw more ratings than some Super Bowls?
Mosley (12:19 PM)
I don't think it will top any Super Bowls, but it's safe to say it will be the highest rated game of the week -- outside of MNF of course! Two NFC East rivals. Brand news stadium. Huge!
john (Berlin)
What did you think of lesean mccoy's rookie debut and do you see him being a key player this year?
Mosley (12:20 PM)
Wasn't able to watch a lot of that game, but I think McCoy will be fine. He's going to make Brian Westbrook a better player. The luxury of being able to sit Westbrook in the second half is a big deal. That will save him up for competitive games.
Jason (Bryn Mawr, PA)
Matt, how could you leave Romo off of your "rising" list this week? There were a ton of doubters questioning Romo's potential success without T.O., although it was only one game, it was certainly a great start. Also, perhaps you could have included the Eagles OL on the "falling" list, since so many said the OL was the best in the Beast even with ALL of the questions.
Mosley (12:21 PM)
Jason, I mentioned him. I just thought Patrick Crayton was a guy that been sort of forgotten. Wanted to go with something less obvious than Romo. But thanks for reading.
jon (newark de)
Do you think the eagles D is good enough to beat drew brees and the saints as long as whoever starts at qb for the eagles doesn't screw up big time seeing as how the Saints D isn't very good
Mosley (12:22 PM)
I don't think the Eagles are going to cause seven turnovers again, no. And remember that Drew Brees gets the ball out a lot faster than Jake Delhomme. What an awful, awful start for Delhomme. Did the Panthers really give the guy an extension? REALLY?
B (NC)
Matt, why has Manningham's impressive TD catch and run been largely ignored? I know Osi's play overshadowed it a bit, but with all the hand wringing done this offseason about the lack of a playmaker at WR, that was an outstanding play and should have received some more attention.
Mosley (12:23 PM)
I think it got plenty of attention in NYC, B. In fact, Manningham couldn't leave his locker after the game because of all the reporters. It was an excellent individual play.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
How big is the loss of Shawn Andrews to that Eagles o-line? Is any QB they put in there safe?
Mosley (12:23 PM)
They'll move the pocket a little bit and help Justice with a TE. I'm just worried about Justice when he see's Osi line up across from him.
Jarem (Cp, MD)
Wow, I think you definitely underrated big Al...He stopped Brandon Jacobs I think...And that directly stopped them from having a touchdown. On top of that, in the second half, Eli started making mistakes due to the pressure...If anyone is @ fault, I think it would be Phillip Daniels (Carter caused the fumble) or Orakpo. Haynesworth stopped the run and provided opportunites to everyone else...It's not on him if they don't take advantage...
Mosley (12:25 PM)
Hmmm...Jarem, that's certainly a very optimistic take. Haynesworth made one really nice play on Jacbos -- and I've acknowledged that. But he was huffing and puffing in the second half, when the Skins needed to keep the Giants off the board. And that 45-yard FG would've been a 50 if not for Haynesworth's offsides. I just wasn't that impressed.
Rick (D.C.)
Matt, Do u think it will be more of the same from the skins or will they actually improve. i know they have a few cupcakes coming up but they did lose to the rams last year...
Mosley (12:26 PM)
I think they'll run off a couple of wins. It's too bad they keep having to open up with the Giants. They're simply not on that level yet.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
How are the Cowboys going to stop the Giants when Cadillac Williams ran all over them on Sunday?
Mosley (12:26 PM)
I don't know that they will "stop" the Giants, but they'll certainly tighten up some of those run blitzes and stay in their base defense a little more. I'm not overreacting to one subpar performance by the run defense.
Yatin (LA)
Hey Matt, love the blog, so far the Beast is looking solid as predicted. Can you help all of us frustrated Eagles fans understand why the Birds just don't cut Andrews already??? Does Andy really believe in him or is it a simple cap issue?
Mosley (12:29 PM)
Yatin, there's definitely some money involved. Plus, you'd have to have the injury settlement. Easier to just put him on the IR. That may be the first step to cutting him. I honestly think the Eagles are tired of seeing the guy around. He doesn't love football, according to some of the folks I talk to the Eagles locker room. That's a pretty big indictment when you're paid huge money to play football. Maybe he'll have more time in his recording studio now.
Jack (silver spring, md)
Matt, Any insight into why the locals in Washington DC think the game was close on Sunday? I mean talk about rose colored glasses?
Mosley (12:29 PM)
I know I know. It never felt close -- even though the score may have shown 17-10 at one point.
joe (Philly)
Why don't the Commanders bench JC and play Collins. JC will not be back with the Skins next year so give collins his chance!
Mosley (12:31 PM)
So you spend part of the offseason trying to build the guy's confidence up and then you pull the plug in the first game? Hey, he shoud've protected the ball on the Osi play. But the INT was just a brilliant play by Webster. You can't just have a knee-jerk reaction in the first game of the season. Giants aren't bad.
Josh (Detroit)
Matt, watch the game tape of the giants/skins again and see how many times big Al was double/triple teamed. He may have only had one nice play against Jacobs, but he certainly made it easier for the rest of the D to make a play (which many times they did not). That is essentially what he did in TN too. Not a big fan of his, but ask any OC, and they will all tell you they have to game plan for him.
Mosley (12:32 PM)
Josh, that's a weak argument my friend. He made it easier on his teammates, but then they didn't make the plays? Really? I'm going to hold a $41 million man to a higher standard than some of you guys. That's fine. Makes for a healthy debate.
Corey (D.C.)
Campbell had a 93 QB rating against arguably the best DEF in the NFL on the road. Would their fans rather have Cutler and his 4 awful INTs against a revamped GB DEF? Campbell had only 6 INTs all year last year. A solid team all around makes the playoffs every year with a QB like that. Skins fans will never learn. Enjoy 4th place in the Beast.
Mosley (12:32 PM)
Thanks, Corey!
Mosley (12:34 PM)
Cowboys are going to move Ware around a little bit more this week. I'm worried that Diehl can't handle his athleticism. Keep your eye on that side.
Jelks (Va.)
I think the eagles should rest Mcnabb because its early in season they still have a good chance against the Saints.
Mosley (12:35 PM)
I'm sort of with you, but McNabb realizes he can't stay out too long. What if Garcia comes in and lights it up Sunday? Garcia and Vick don't think of themselves as backups. This is shaping up to be a juicy situation.
Os (Jersey)
The Cowboys need to put the ball in Felix's hands a bit more...
Mosley (12:36 PM)
Agreed. He got banged up Sunday. That may have something to do with his limited involvement.
David (Richmond, VA)
How bad is Felix Jones' thigh bruise? I never heard about it until after the game on Sunday and haven't heard much since. Is he going to be 100% for Sunday night? The Cowboys need to get him more touches.
Mosley (12:36 PM)
Any injury to Felix right now is a concern because of what he went through last season. But I'm told that the thigh is not a big deal. We'll obviously keep you posted on any developments on that front.
James (DC)
Anthony Specer is a bust. Do you think the Cowboys should have kept Ellis? He's a whiner, but when he blitzes, he is a force. I still can't grasp why Coach Cupcake made him drop back 90% of the time last year.
Mosley (12:38 PM)
Too early to call Spencer a bust. Give him a couple weeks. He needs to put more pressure on the QB. Let's see if he shows up against the Giants. We're so fixated with sacks that we sometimes ignore when a guy gets some knockdowns and hurries. Let's give Spencer until at least Week 3 before we bring up the "B" word again.
Kel (Iowa)
How smart does Dallas look after week 1 getting rid of T.O.?
Mosley (12:40 PM)
That's one of the funniest storylines of the week! T.O. leaves -- and the Cowboys wideouts absolutely go off. Now you actually have people in Dallas going on the radio and begging for more methodical drives. REALLY?
RICK (WILMINGTON DE)
After the Eagles dominated the panthers, the cowboys beat the bucs, and the giants beat the Commanders, where are the power rankings now? I have to believe Dallas is moving to atleast 12 from 17.
Mosley (12:40 PM)
I believe the Power Rankings Party begins at approximately 2 p.m. ET.
Chaz (Arlington)
I know you were high on Austin in preseason. Do you think he out performs Crayton?
Mosley (12:41 PM)
I think Crayton's done a nice job of holding those guys off. Just his ability to stay on the field gives him an advantage over Austin and Hurd.
Alex (Jersey)
Hey Matt, How big of a deal are the injuries to Danny Ware and Nicks to the Giants? I feel like Ware certainly is helpful on 3rd downs and taking some of the load from Jacobs and Bradshaw early in the season to keep them fresh, anyway we bring someone in? Also Nicks was starting to show alot of potential the last few weeks any news on when he'll be back and how serious the injury is?
Mosley (12:43 PM)
They certainly don't help. Nicks was really starting to make a move. This is an obvious setback. I'm not thinking he's going to be out more than two games. Ware could be a bit longer. But Jerry Reese always keeps RBs in the stable. I'm not worried.
Mike (Girard, PA)
Week 2 game predictions? Gotta make your picks.
Mosley (12:43 PM)
I make those picks on Friday afternoon -- when I have more info. I want to see how Romo's responding to the ankle. And I'd like to watch this McNabb situation.
MJ Gill (Boston)
what was Romo thinking on the stop fade to Martellus? He had him on Ronde, the perfect matchup and he didn't throw a jump ball. That poor throw cost them 4 points. Its plays like that, that drive me nuts about Romo....His stats at the end of the day outshined his performance...he played good, but wasn't perfect.
Mosley (12:44 PM)
Was Tom Brady perfect last night?
Alex (DC)
The "Sound the Alarm!" or "Isn't he the next big thing" questions are crazy after 1 game of the season, so with that in mind, I'll ask a longer-view question - what are we not seeing as to why the Giants don't try to get Sinorice Moss more involved? Or is he involved and just not getting open? He seems to catch most everything thrown his way and scores a disproportionate number of touchdowns given his few total touches.
Mosley (12:46 PM)
Alex, he's simply the fifth WR right now. You're not going to find a lot of No. 5 receivers getting looks. That's sort of what it comes down to. He's so small that he can't really give you much in the intermediate game. You'll see him sneak out there and go deep every now and then. But once Barden's ready for prime time, there might not be a spot for Sinorice.
Brian (DC)
Other than the fake field goal call, Zorn was extremely predictable and vanilla bland again. Someone needs to remind him the preseason is over and you can open up the playbook now.
Mosley (12:47 PM)
I think the Skins definitely need to take more shots down the field. But once again, they just never had much of a rhythm going. How many deep passes do you guys remember? The one to Moss...I guess that's it.
Cliff (Blacksburg, VA)
A quick rules question. When Osi scored the TD against the Commanders, it seemed like he went to the ground and celebrated the TD which is against the rules. Was I seeing something wrong or did the refs just not call it?
Mosley (12:48 PM)
I need to look at that again. As long as he didn't do something like several pushups or the Worm, then I don't think it's a problem. I'll review that play, though.
Chad (Las Vegas)
Philly has opened as a 1.5 pt favorite vs the Saints. That means they are only a fav because they are playing at home. Any thoughts?
Mosley (12:49 PM)
Not that I know anything about gambling, but you'll see some steam on this game if there's more news on McNabb. If McNabb plays, the Eagles will be favored by four or five points. If he's ruled out, I think the Eagles will settle in as two or three-point faves. But again, I know nothing about this sort of thing!
Robbie (NYC)
Why was Orakpo so quiet against the Giants??
Mosley (12:50 PM)
First regular-season game and he's trying to learn a new position. He needs to be rushing the passer early and often. I think the Giants' OL did a nice job giving Eli time for the most part. He was getting the ball out too quickly for Rak and Al to do much.
MJ Gill (Boston)
Marcus Spears played better than Jay Ratliff on Sunday, I was surprised...
Mosley (12:52 PM)
That's funny. One of my scouting buddies said Spears struggled. I'll look into a little more. Ratliff's going to struggle against enormous guards at times. Davin Joseph comes to mind. But his quickness allows him to be effective most of the time. O'Hara and Seubert could struggle with him.
Myles (Bethesda, MD)
The reason the Skins didn't take any deep shots is because JC is simply afraid to take any kind of chance. Disagree? Then why has it been the same thing over and over no matter the coach and no matter the scheme? Are you telling me Gibbs, Saunders, and now Zorn don't want to throw the ball downfield? Collins has average arm strength at best and he threw more downfield touchdowns in a month than JC did in two seasons.
Mosley (12:53 PM)
I don't agree. Campbell was simply running the plays that were called by Z.
kevin (jersey)
Vick, Mcnabb, Garcia... who finishes the season with the eagles?
Mosley (12:54 PM)
Vick and McNabb are the definite guys. Secretly, I think they'd trade Kolb in a heartbeat if the right deal was out there. But it won't be.
Zorro (Arlington)
Baylor should've hired Sumlin!
Mosley (12:55 PM)
Whatever, Zorro! I love Sumlin, but a lot of those kids were brought in by Art. Don't forget that.
Mal (Passaic, NJ) [via mobile]
Matty, love the beastlines.. Does Donavan play sunday? (My guess is yes) The defense was stellar; is it time to close the book on "Dawn" Andrews?
Mosley (12:55 PM)
I'm closing the book on Andrews. And no, I think McNabb will sit.
adesimo1 (Burbank, CA)
Will Trent Cole have a good day since the saints are missing their starting LT? Or is Brees too quick and accurate to allow for a lot of pressure?
Mosley (12:55 PM)
Trent Cole's a tremendous player. He'll have another good day.
Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)
MattMo, I'm getting pretty annoyed at the sight of Wade jumping up and down on the sidelines; give the mana pom-pom for god sakes. The man needs to realize he's a coach and needs to hold his composure sometimes
Mosley (12:56 PM)
Luis, I don't call that "jumping."
Chris (DC)
Santana Moss said several deep passes were called. JC is simply afraid to throw deep unless he's wide open -- and then he usually overthrows him by five yards.I just don't get the excuse making for Campbell by the media. I know he's a nice guy and all, but there's a reason Gregg Williams and Joe Gibbs both told Snyder Collins should be the starter.
Mosley (12:57 PM)
Forget Gregg Williams. And Gibbs is a huge Campbell supporter. Moss is like any other wide receiver. He desperately wants the ball. If Z wanted more downfield throws, he would've told Campbell to pull the trigger.
Kyle (Dallas)
Why wont the cowoys take advantage of all the height they have on the team i.e. Bennet, Witten, Williams? I feel like they could play these guys in a way that the Giants did with Plaxico....throw it high, they have great hands.
Mosley (12:59 PM)
You'll see a lot more of Bennett this week. Every opposing team tries to focus on Witten -- and that's pretty smart. As Witten goes, so goes this offense. But Bennett's going to have a huge game soon. It could happen Sunday night.
Mike (Atlanta)
How crazy will JerryWorld be?
Mosley (1:00 PM)
Mike, it will be a wild scene. I may get there about six or seven hours early. Should be fun.
David (Pittsburgh)
Anything in week one that has made you consider revising your predictions for the season, or does all remain the same?
Mosley (1:01 PM)
Worried about my Dolphins wildcard pick...I'm pretty sure everything else holds up. Please tell me I didn't pick the Panthers to do anything. I'm having trouble remembering right now.
BSB (Philly)
When did Broderick Bunkley turn into such a beast?
Mosley (1:02 PM)
The guy had a rough start to this career, but he came back strong. Just a very, very athletic big man. Love watching his footwork. Eagles are really good in the middle. We don't write about that enough. YES!!! We just surpassed 500 on the chat. I'm about to head out. You guys have been awesome. Let's go back to the front of the line.
Mike (San Francisco, CA)
Can we please talk about how good Corey Webster is? Because he doesn't make many highlight reel plays (like the pick from Sunday), most people don't realize how dominant he has been over the last year. KC Joyner's metrics had him as one of the top 3 corners in the league last year. He consistently shuts down the other team's top receiver.
Mosley (1:04 PM)
Good point, Mike. Webster's quietly become one of the best. And he was benched in '07. Just a really, really good player. The INT the other day on the sideline was one of the best you'll see this season. Campbell was shocked.
Bill (NYC)
Hey Matt, love the blog! What do you think the Eagles plan to do in place of Shawn Andrews now that he's on IR. Do you think they'd consider bringing Runyan back or will they just stick with what they have?
Mosley (1:06 PM)
I'll be talking to Runyan this afternoon. I'll let you know what he says. You guys have been unbelievable. If my editors would let me, I'd do two of these a week! We surpassed 500 and we were well on our way to 1,000. Thanks for all the great questions -- and threats.
Matt is running a few minutes late. He'll be here shortly!
