Could Shanahan end up in Dallas?

From the moment I heard about Mike Shanahan's firing in Denver on Tuesday, I knew it wouldn't take long for him to be linked to the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, AFC West blogger Bill Williamson beat me to the punch Tuesday evening with his entry that listed several possible destinations for Shanahan.

After making several calls around the league this morning, here's what you need to know about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Mike Shanahan:

They're in love with each other.

Shanahan has told reporters and colleagues over the years how much respect he has for Jones as an owner. And now that I think about it, I've heard Jones sing Shanahan's praises on numerous occasions.

I realize Jones has come out in support of Wade Phillips, but that was before Shanahan became a free agent. The toughest thing for Shanahan to accept would be that Jones has final say on all personnel decisions. Shanahan was one of only three coaches in the league who had final say in his organization, and adjusting to a more hands-on owner might be tough. But if Shanahan's willing to swallow a little pride and about $7 million or so per year, then there's a chance he could make things work.

As a personnel man, Shanahan has delivered quite a few busts. The Broncos don't have a single member of their 2003 draft class on the roster and 2004 and 2005 don't have many representatives. But Shanahan certainly brings a lot of intangibles to the table, not the least of which are his two Super Bowl trophies from the 1990s.

He became intoxicated with Jay Cutler's arm strength and mobility despite the fact that the former first-rounder committed turnovers at the worst-possible moments.

In Dallas, Shanahan would inherit another franchise quarterback who is struggling with turnovers. But it was Shanahan who attempted to sign Tony Romo as a free agent out of Eastern Illinois in 2003. In fact, the Broncos outbid the Cowboys, but Romo alertly noticed that Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson were in front of him in Dallas.

Shanahan also has an affinity for Terrell Owens, which is something else he has in common with Jones. The Broncos coveted T.O. before he signed with the Cowboys in 2006.

Jones would probably have to fire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to make room for Shanahan, who would take over play calling. And it would be the second time Shanahan would've replaced Wade Phillips, who was fired in Denver before the 1995 season.

There's a good chance Shanahan ends up somewhere else, but I guarantee you that Jones is thinking things over as we speak. Shanahan's one of the few men in the league who would cause Jones to make a drastic move.

That is, if you think firing Phillips qualifies as a drastic move.

I don't see him in Dallas, I just dont see it.

Its probably a longshot, but I could see Shanahan working for Jones and vice versa.

Oh God!!! :bang2: it will never end. Shanny's Zone Blocking offense won't work with the 330 Plus monsters we have.

The only person Jerry is in love with is himself. :)

If Shanahan and Jerry are as close as these articles say, it HAS to be going through Jerry's mind - just has to be. He cannot be 100% sure about this continuity thing working. If he can fill up the new stadium faster and he thinks Shanny is the better coach and Shnanny could get a new DC in here that would fit the 3-4 (Crennell) then I don't see how he could not make a change - unless he is just that committed to Garrett taking over some day!

First of all who says he is going to incorporate zone blocking. Secondly how do you know it won't work with modifications to fit our offensive line.

Let's just keep Wade and we can mumble and stumble our continuity next season.

I just can't see this happening. i can't see Jerry going from absolutely no way he's changing coaches to firing Wade and Jason in order to bring in Mike.

Another disaster in the making. A control freak like Shanahan ceding power to Jerry because he's desperate for a job? No thanks. If we laugh at the notion of Wade suddenly changing, then Shanahan should be no different. Funny how the HC is always the fall guy in Dallas and not the GM.

the thing is he might not have to fire Garrett, because Garrett might get his own deal anyway

and who knows if he would have given Wade a vote of confidence if he had any inkling that he had a shot at Shanahan (or Holmgren, or Cowher etc etc)

Jerry was and is close to Norv Turner, but guess what?

He hired Wade Turner, because this team invested heavily in the defense and he thought Jason Garrett could do just fine as an OC...

The defense improved, the offense regressed... Our problems were clearly the offense this year, with it's middle of the pack performance, despite putting major money into it, by the re-signing of TO and the addition of players like Roy Williams..

The only thing Jerry can hope for is Garrett gets a head coaching offer, so he can replace his OC with somebody that can actually do something...

If Jerry hires a coach like Shanahan, or Holmgren, or Cowher, while he will publicly say he controls everything, its a safe bet the coach is having a large input.

Man, if Wade would step aside to run the D, Garrett stayed ot run the O, and Shanahan was the HC I'd feel like I won the lottery.

except that the first yr Garrett was here, the offense got better, the QB improved and he set all sorts of records...but lets forget about that right?

Especially when those modifications are discipline, hard work, accountability, and a no nonsense HC. You'll be amazed at what those things will change on a team..

Honestly I wouldnt be stunned, but I think if Garrett somehow stayed it'd be in a role similar to what Kubiak had while he was in Denver. Offensive coordinator in name only.

Wade's a different story. He might say hes had enough and walk away completely, or Jones might let him keep his current pay if he'd go upstairs and just call defenses.

I really think Shanahan comes more into play for us if Garrett gets a HC job, or if Jones BELIEVES he's going to get a HC job.

And the 4-6 defense wreaked havoc for about how long, before teams figured it out and it went into the toilet as a base defense???

What happened this year with that same offense, when teams pretty much figured it out? Funny how the addition of a player that ran a similar system in Detroit and put up pro-bowl numbers for the majority of his career couldn't be incorporated into this offense... Funny how Crayton, who averaged how many catches last year, didn't sniff the ball this year even after getting a limited number 2 threat...

AMazing how the best performance of TO was when a team decided to go away from the cover-2 man that most teams were playing and as soon as teams went back to the same cover-2, Garrett's offense went to crap...
