Quick Take: Cowboys at Vikings
January, 10, 2010 Jan 109:00AM ET
By Matt Mosley

The Cowboys and Vikings both have excellent defenses and elite quarterbacks. Tony Romo and Brett Favre have put up huge numbers this season, while doing a nice job of protecting the football. Dallas is definitely the hotter team, having won four consecutive games.

The Vikings are coming off a blowout win over the Giants, but they dropped three games in December and seemed to lose their edge in the process. The Vikings have one of the best running backs in the game in Adrian Peterson, but the Cowboys have been virtually impossible to run against. The last time Favre faced the Cowboys (Nov. 29, 2007), he was 5-of-14 for 56 yards and he threw two interceptions before being knocked out of the game. The Packers were 10-1 at the time.

The Vikings' offensive line has slipped late in the season and I think DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer could have some success getting to Favre on Sunday. Against the Eagles, though, the Cowboys could basically ignore the running game and focus on rushing Donovan McNabb. Stopping the run will be much more of a priority with Peterson in the backfield.

The Vikings have a couple of big-play threats in Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice, but the Cowboys have a lot of confidence after shutting down DeSean Jackson in three games. It will be more important than ever to make tackles and not allow one of those players to take off after making a catch.

Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is one of the best pass-rushers in the league, but he's been relatively quiet over the past month. Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams played well the past two games, but he doesn't do well in loud environments. Vikings fans pride themselves in causing false starts, and Adams is normally willing to go along. I would expect Wade Phillips to pipe in noise during practice this week to help prepare his team.

I think this will be one of the best matchups of the playoffs, but the Cowboys seem to be on more of a roll. The win on the road in New Orleans has given them a tremendous amount of confidence. I don't think they'll be bothered by a hostile environment. And with a quarterback who's not making mistakes, and a defense that's not yielding many points, this is a very dangerous Cowboys team. Should be a fun week.

NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert and I will have you covered all week long leading up to the big game. The Cowboys got the monkey off their back by finally winning a playoff game after a 13-year drought. They should be even more relaxed heading into this divisional playoff game. Winning Saturday night was a mental hurdle that Phillips and Romo needed to clear.

Now they can simply focus on advancing in the playoffs.

It's time to add Witten to that presnap penalty talk. No more free passes. For some reason, he has been our biggest problem there lately.

Allen versus Adams will be HUGE. We need Adams to bring his A game.

I think there was so much emotion playing a big division rival & needing a playoff win so bad that they were just careless. I think they will clean it up this week.

Yes. Witten has had a very good season, from a production standpoint but has been, for whatever reasons and out of the blue, a penalty machine.

...Gurode, Kosier and Davis versus the Williams wall up front is going to be a huge factor in the game.

It could dictate whether we control the line of scrimmage or not.

As with all typical media articles they will focus on the main actors as keys to the game. This year I believe it is the contributions of the lesser known Cowboys who are going to add extra fire power to an already hot Cowboys team.

Go Phillips, Bennett, Anderson, Hurd, Ogletree, Free, Butler, Siavii, Hatcher, Watkins, Ball and anyone else I missed. These guys are the secret to possibly the best "team" effort we have witnessed in some time.

We have always owned Favre. I know that he is 0-9 against the Cowboys in Dallas, not sure what is home record is.

Sadly it's 2-0 at home, but those took place in frigid Green Bay where Dallas never won until 2008, and in the regular season. This will be in a climate controlled dome in a playoff environment. No matter where the game is played, Favre is 0-3 vs Dallas in the postseason.

Except he's been penalized quite a bit the entire season.

I think Flo, after all these years, can finally taste it, and will bring his A game from here on out.

This matchup is going to be tough! But bring it on Vikings! It will be a very fun game to watch.

Peterson will put the ball on the ground, Favre will make mistakes if hassled. Get after them!

I like the prospect of our suddenly dominant pass rush going against Minnesota's suddenly shaky line.

Indeed! It's been known that their tackles have been the weak spot of their O-line and our biggest strength are our outside linebackers. Just looks like a bad matchup for them lining up against Ware and Spencer. Plus, Tommie Harris dominated the interior of their line 2 weeks ago, and I can see Ratliff doing the same!

His entire career, actually. Especially with getting set for a count prior to the snap.

Flo has played his best Football in years in the last 4 weeks

Earlier int he year he did not look like a Pro Bowl Linemen down the stretch he has elevated his play.

Something between the Giants lose and going to New Orleans to play them changed on this team was it Ware's injury I do not know but ever since that game the team has elevated it's play across the board

I believe we win if our defense gets to Favre. I can see him throwing balls out and getting intercepted multiple times this game.

On offense, we have to protect Romo. Jared Allen scares me.

He's had a total of 4 sacks and 1 tackle for loss in the last 8 games. 2 of those sacks came vs Chicago in that home blowout win. He got 1 last week vs NYG in that laydown game.

I dont know if he's slowed by injury or what, but he's done next to nothing for two months.
