The Wide Reciever position.

This year I think you legitimately have 12 capable players fighting it our for 5 or 6 roster spots and possibly 1 or 2 practice squad spots.. With Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Dwayne Harris, and Terrance Williams already being locks for the 53 man roster that means the remaining 8 will have to fight it out for 1 or 2 roster spots and possibly 1 or 2 practice squad spots..

So with Dez, Miles, Harris, and T. Williams out of the way here is a brief summary of the remaining candidates.

Anthony Armstrong (5'11 175lbs) - Armstrong went undrafted out of West Texas A&M and bounced around the arena league.. He is already 30 years old but relatively new to the NFL.. he started with the Commanders in 2010 which was his most productive year.. Had 44 receptions for 871 yards and 3 Touchdowns.. Armstrong is a burner on the outside who could provide the cowboys with a situational deep-threat..Cowboys seem to like him a lot as theydropped Andre Holmes to get him.
Cole Beasley (5'8 175lbs) - Beasley was an undrafted free agent out of SMU who made the Cowboys roster last year.. Beasley is a fan favorite who has a knack for getting open underneath.. Had 15 catches for 128 yards last year.. Cowboys certainly like him but he is competing for a chance to get reps in the slot which looks like it will be a crowded spot with the addition of Williams possibly pushing Austin and Harris into the slot more as well as Danny Coale

Tim Benford (5'11 205lbs) - Benford was a undrafted player out of Tennessee Tech who spent last year on the Cowboys practice squad.. Benford is a good route runner with reliable soft hands.. Benford impressed Cowboys coaches in training camp as well as preseason..

Danny Coale (6'0 190lbs) - Danny Coale out of Virginia Tech was the Cowboys 2012 5th round draft pick.. Coale failed to make the 53 man roster but was kept around on practice squad where he would suffer a torn ACL later on in the season.. Coale is quick and was a top performer in both shuttle drills at the combine and is a tough player with good hands.. Coale The Cowboys clearly like Coale as they used a draft pick on him but it will be interesting to see how he fits in

Jared Green (6'1 190lbs) - Jared Green was an undrafted player in 2012 out of Southern University..Green is a receiver with some length and speed.. He ran a 4.42 at his pro day.. Green can return punts and kicks..It is unclear what the Cowboys interest level in Green is.. Green was signed to a futures contract a few months ago

Greg Herd (6'3 202lbs) - Herd is another receiver with some length.. He is undrafted out of Eastern Washtington and was the 628th ranked draftable player according to CBS.. Heard has played many positions during his football career including quarterback and safety.. Herd seems like a long shot to make the team but with his height and length it wouldn't surprise me if he pulled it off

Carlton Mitchell (6'3 210lbs) - Mitchell who was a 6th round pick out of Central Florida for the Browns in 2010 is one of the more interesting players in this group.. He possesses a rare combination of size, strength, and speed.. Mitchell only caught 3 passes in his 2 years with the Browns.. Mitchell has good hands and plays fearlessly and with passion.. Mitchell was also noted in many scouting reports as a great run blocker.. Mitchell could be a sleeper candidate to make this team and knock a guy like Beasley or Coale out.

Eric Rogers (6'3 206lbs) - Rogers is an undrafted player out of Cal Lutheran who possesses a good combination of Size and Speed.. Was very productive at Cal Lutheran but it is hard to know exactly what he is until we see him against NFL quality competition.. Rogers has the physical tools to be a successful NFL player.. Rogers could be a good candidate for a spot on the practice squad this year

With each guy bringing something different it makes for a very interesting battle.

Also thought it was interesting that Jerry Jones said they prefer Dwayne Harris in the slot which puts Cole Beasley and Danny Coale in some jeopardy.. Very excited to see how this all turns out.

My Prediction: Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Terrance Williams, Dwayne Harris, Carlton Mitchell, and Danny Coale make the 53 man roster and Cole Beasley and Eric Rogers get stashed on practice squad.

Wouldn't be surprised if both Coale and Cole make it, but if it's just one of them, I'd say it probably goes to Benford.

Also, I have to disagree with the theme of the thread, while the receiver spot poses an interesting competition, I'm most interested to see how the O-Line pans out.

Nice and thorough write-up. They could go with 7 WR's possibly but doubtful if they go the 12 route. Beasley has some work to do in order to make the team, practice squad might be his destination until injuries start to mount.

Other notable battles.....off line and safety.

it should definitely be an interesting battle for those WRs...special teams obviously will be the key there

for me though it's gonna be the battles at safety and the Sam linebacker

Other good competitions (besides the WR and Oline alraeqdy mentioned) should be:

SAM linebacker
Strong Safety
Free Safety

Ehh I don't think its as interesting as you are making it out to be. Dez, Miles, Williams, and Harris are virtual locks. That leaves 2 spots between most likely Cole, Beasely, and Armstrong. I also think there will be a lot less use for the 5th WR with the addition of Escobar who can be used outside like a WR. This is assuming everyone (*cough*miles*cough*) stays healthy of course.

I would say safety and guard are both a lot more interesting because the guys who win the battles will see the field a lot more than whoever wins the 5th and 6th WR job.

Garrett and the media is the battle I'm waiting to see, he won't be able to brush off everything with smug robot answers.

I agree that Safety and O-Line are other interesting battles.. But I chose WR as the most interesting simply because I think it has the most capable guys competing for the least spots.. It's basically 8 guys competeing for 2 spots and possibly a practice squad spot.. at Safety we have Church, Johnson, McCray, Allen, Wilcox, Hamilton, and Michah Pellerin.. I think we probably keep 4 and keep 1 on practice squad which means only 1 guy wont be on the team in some form..

Prediction: He'll still be battling his in-game instincts this year even after he's fired.

In terms of the WR battle the one who I am really interested in is Eric Rogers. For those of you who haven't looked at the highlight film that can be seen on BP's sticky thread on draftees and UDFAs.

This guy is big, fast and has ball skills. He can really go up and snatch the ball with his hands. He also has the ability to catch the ball and absorb a hit. He is a top notch athlete having won national titles in the long jump and being ranked in triple jump, I believe (but that could be backwards).

The guy is really intriguing but is raw as raw can be and probably needs at least a year on the PS before he is really ready to compete in the NFL. If he flashes in preseason I wouldn't be surprised if we don't just keep him on the roster like we did with Miles Austin back in 2006.

Great write up,enjoyed. I'm anxious to see what Eric Rogers can bring to the table. Worried about Coale with that foot injury and torn ACL. After getting in one or two pre-season games last year, coming off the foot injury he looked a step slow.

If Beasley goes on the PS he will be snatched up by another team in no time. I think he has great potential and hope he is on the roster for years to come.

Regarding Coale, will he be ready for the start of camp?

That is a hole lot of competition for the roster. Nevermind the bottom 45-53 churn. Country club? Those guys aren't going to see the golf course or the bar until TC is over and beyond.

We'll go with 6 WR's and, barring injury, they will be the following in order (to start the season):

Dez
Austin
Harris
Williams
Beasley
Coale

And I'd like to see the cowboys play them ALL. I want to see them all get quality reps, especially early in the season. That way Austin and Dez have more in the tank for the 2nd half of the season.

This.

I agree completely we will keep 6. And barring injury, I think its close to being a lock on these 6.

I am curious about the OL battle. Tyron is a lock at LT. Frederick is a lock, question is, where? I think its probably at C. The rest could be up for grabs. I believe Livings will start too, but its possible he is beaten out.

I am also anxious to hear about the DL, particularly, the backups in camp.
