I have given this some thought. We have a group of high priced, (most of them millionaires) playing a sport, on one of the Nations highest profile teams.
What do you do as a coach to motivate them?

Yeah Parcells doesn't run up and down the sidelines, he doesn't Denny Green during his Pcs.
We don't know what he does all week at practice.

If they don't buy the coaching how come we went on a nice win streak?

What does one do to motivate Pro Athletes?

What's it going to be then, eh?

That is a tough call.

It is clear these players on this team don't fear failure, nor do they embarass easily.

If that were the case we wouldn't continue to play so poorly.

Parcells has said many times that if a player has a competitive nature, he can motivate them.

1. Put them in a position to succeed.

2. Make it clear that if they still can't produce, you'll find someone else who can.

The only thing that can really motivate a professional athlete is embarrassment....but if that were the case, you wouldn't have teams losing 3, 4, or 5 straight games.

Actually another thing that can motivate professional athletes is an incentive laden contract.

i think alot of players abuse the name of being a dallas cowboy. just being a dallas cowboy is good enough for some of them. i think when alot of players become cowboys they just expect to be good without working for it, like it comes with the title of "dallas cowboys" or something. they need a good smack in the face for motivation

Were they not in position to win one game and win the East?
Parcells and company were just as responsible for getting them there as the players were.

Thats my problem, why wasn't that motivation enough for a young team?
We all know they played lifeless.

I'm talking about positioning for success on the field. Asking Singleton to cover Furrey is not what I'd call positioning a player for success...

As Professionals they should not need people to motivate them.

Professionals certainly DO need to be motivated. Most of us can look around our workplaces and see individuals and departments that are full of professionals who need motivation. The right kind of management can provide that.

Through threatening their jobs? Not promoting them? I have to motivate my employees at times but I have the means and ways to fire on a daily basis.

That doesn't hold true in sports.
I know they need motivation but the question is how do you motivate them?
You can only sit so many. You can only take away so many plays.
