Thinking about it. Was going to rent a few months on the big island and Oahu. I love to fish offshore and to scuba so I thought I'd give it a try. Understand the increased cost of living. Any locals here?

Born and raised in Hawaii. Go back all the time to visit family. My family is originally from Moloka'i.

First thing you have to check are job prospects. Like you mentioned the cost of living there is pretty high.

Looked for software engineering jobs out there when I got out of college, but the prospects were limited.

Other than that - great place to grow up. The fishing and diving all around the Hawaiian Islands can't be compared.

Well it depends on money and lifestyle. If you are retired then you options are much better, but if you have to work then you have to worry about finding a job and The big island doesn't have a lot of jobs at all, its not very populated. So there is a much slower pace of life there. You will get to know everyone. LOL But for fishing and diving, its an excellent choice.

Oahu is like most other big cities. I say that because you really have to think of Oahu as one big city even though its not. There is much more to do and so the social scene is much better and the fishing and diving and great as well.

Best bang for the buck in Hawaii right now is in Hilo on the big island. They have a bit more rain but you can find some great places for a smidge under 200k.

It's the jobs there thats the problem for many. High cost of living and not much economy to offset it.

Living on Oahu would be crazy expensive.

If it's all about deep sea fishing and scuba (scuba rocks!) I think you have better (cheaper) options closer to the mainland.
