Hey guys, first post for me. How many of you guys think they should make a movie about Dat? I see him as a modern day "rudy" that went even further in his dreams of playing football in college and professionally.
For those who are not familiar with him, Dat grew up in a poor Vietnamese family that fled to the America during the the Vietnam War in search of a new and better life. Growing up in Texas, Dat began playing football at an early age. He was a player who received a lot of criticism about being too small to even play back in his high school days. He proved everybody wrong and went on to become one of college football's elite linebackers.
His accomplishments at Texas A&M includes All Big-12 Conference Football - 1st team, Big 12 Conference - Defensive Player of the Year, Chuck Bednarik Award - College Defensive Player of the Year, All-American, consensus (1998), Texas A&M Football Team MVP (1997) and the list goes on. With such achievements, many still believed that he would ever make it in the pros.
It appeared that no team would take a chance with Dat in the '99 NFL Draft but the Dallas Cowboys couldn't ignore the type of player he was and was capable of becoming. He was drafted in the 3rd round no. 85 overall by Dallas and from there on, he immediately made an impact on the team. Dat led the team in tackles three times, in 2001, 2003, and 2004. He recorded 516 tackles in 7 seasons with the Cowboys but still did not receive the credit that he so deserved. Because of a neck injury he suffered in the '05 season, Dat was forced to retire on March 3, 2006 without ever making a Pro Bowl appearance.
I truly miss his presence on the team. He was an inspirational leader that everybody enjoyed being around. He was just peaking at the time of his retirement and really could have been a true Pro Bowler or even an All Pro. I'm glad to know that he is still with the organization though. Sorry for the rant but I truly think a movie about Dat's story would be great. What do you guys think?
