I have seen this mention in a few places...

the proposal is to move the trade deadline back to around the 12th game or the 3/4 mark of the season...

I think it is a great proposal for 2 reasons...

1) is that contending teams can put a final tweak on their roster.

2) is that non contending teams can get a good price(in draft pick(s)) for players allowing them to look forward to the future

thoughts?

The trade deadline has been a big non-event in the NFL and I think moving it back might change that, but there's no guarantee.

I don't consider myself an extremely smart football guy, so here are some questions:

1. Could a new player coming in on defense adjust to a new scheme and a different set of players around him quickly? Although not a complete match to a trade situation, does the Tank Johnson experience say anything about someone new fitting into a rotation at this point in a season?

2. Could an offensive player (particularly at the "skill" positions) quickly the develop the timing necessary to succeed with the QB?

Trades work in baseball because the game is one where individuals play as individuals. I don't know if mid (or late)-season trades in football work because individuals must fit (and buy) into a scheme.

without trying to be funny but it really would come down to the individual

how fast can he learn...is he a savy vet...or an energtic younglin

I think in most cases it would be a vet that is traded... so the learning curve shouldn't be so great

Is it being considered? I hadn't read anything or heard anything that indicated it is.

It was on 10/18 this past year(a tuesday) so going into week 7 of the NFL season.

I like your idea of week 8 or at least until after everyone has had their bye week.

There has been some rumbling that they will take this up at the next owners meeting. I do believe that Jerry Jones is one of the owners that does supoort this?

I wonder why? There aren't many trades already. This isn't going to alleviate the cap for anyone. Guys won't know the systems when they get there and aren't likely to be used.

NFL trades other than Draft day just don't have much impact.

10. What if the trade deadline were this weekend?

There is a growing sentiment among some NFL people that the trading deadline should be extended to the end of the third quarter of the season, which happens to be this week. Can you imagine what the Raiders could get for running back LaMont Jordan right now? Oakland knows its season is really about getting ready for 2008 and that Jordan could bring them a nice draft pick to build upon. There are so many playoff contenders in dire need of a running back with nowhere to turn but to the practice squads around the league. At last count, there were 16 running backs on NFL practice squads to look at if you need a back; none compare to Jordan. A concern about moving back the trading deadline would be the fear of teams dumping players in a late-season fire sale. One personnel guy had a good idea to prevent this: "Set a limit of one trade per team from the present trading deadline to now."

totally I agree...I cant remember where, but I thought I read that Jones said it was something they were definitely going to look at in the offseason this yr...moving it back to after Thanksgiving

I totally agree, it needs to be moved

I think with the salary caps being as high as they are it alleviates some of this...most teams can absorb the cap hit, especially if its someone they want to move

the league could probably adopt something though to make trades easier, perhaps by having something where the two teams that are trading share the cap hit or something, rather than one eating it all
