Multiple scouts & GMs say Patrick Peterson will likely end up at safety "in 3 to 4 yr

Realtick, I'd already edited that because at first I didn't catch that you were talking about the stretching, but I guess I was too late...

Yes, all these guys stretch and do drills, but the best corners are tremendous, tremendous athletes, and hip flexibility is one of the absolute most important attributes they must have. It's one thing for, say, a bulky corner like a Quentin Jammer to be borderline and have to work on that, but this guy we're talking about is supposed to be one of the top talents of the last few decades. And none of those Sanders/Haynes guys had to have their evaluations hedged by saying they could play safety if they were too tight to hack it at corner.

And one thing I snipped our that I had before was that I've been very up front in saying that I haven't seen the greatness everyone else sees in this guy, but I also admit that I haven't seen him play that much. I don't see an all-time great type, but I could well be wrong.

I wrote a nice detailed response to you and tried to post it and apparently my internet went out and erased what I wrote when I backpaged. I'm too lazy to retype it.

I know you're not anti-Peterson.

We'll just have to disagree on this one. :)

Shocker........

I think we already have some members on this PP is a safety train.

I don't understand why him being a safety is a bad thing. Ed Reed, Polumalu, Berry, Sanders, Dawkins and others are some of the biggest impact players on the defensive side of the ball in a while. I don't understand this notion that safties don't have as high of value as corners. I'd take a S with the talent of PP #1 overall without hesitation.

How far would you be willing to trade up for him if it where your call to make? For me if he is still on the board at 5 I'm on the phone making calls to Arz.

And, as a follow up to that question: how far would you hope the Cowboys would be willing to trade up for him?

Your right safety is huge, and one with the physical skills of PP is a gem. But just because he can play corner doesn't mean he can play safety. Some corners have a hard time seeing the whole field. If i was drafting a corner with plans of moving him to safety, it would be Aaron Williams. He has the physical tools and is much cheaper.

Like Kobe or MJ didn't have to spend hours in the gym shooting?

Not the same thing...

A better analogy would be a if there were questions about whether MJ could guard NBA twos, and he said that in the pros he'd have plenty of time to stay flexible and agile enough to do so. You wouldn't ever hear that.

And tick, I'm not necessarily anti-Peterson, but I'm not that pro-Peterson, either. Let's just say that I'm very skeptical. If we pick him, I'll just hope he's as great as everyone says.

I wouldnt trade up any for him. If he fell in my lap at 9, that might be different.

That said, if the Cowboys had him as unquestionably the #1 guy on their board and he got to 6 or 7, I'd throw a middle rd pick out there, or maybe a middle rd pick in this yr and next yrs draft to take him.

But in my opinion, unless a CB is Deion Sanders or Mike Haynes, it aint worth it in todays NFL. The rules are just to skewed towards the passing game.

Great so we draft him and he plays like Champ Bailey for 3-4 years and then converts to Ed Reed. Fine by me :D

People forget what makes Ed Reed so great at FS is his unbelievably feel/instincts for the game and intelligence for the position. I dont think Peterson has anywhere near that kind of football intelligence or acumen.

I marvel at all of you people who would have never drafted a 6'9" point guard.

Brilliant strategy.

He still isn't my first choice. I won't be terribly disappointed if we end up with him. But I still feel the game is won in the trenches and we have needs on both sides.

That would be the concern.

Patrick Peterson is a fantastic athlete, but NFL people without a doubt are questioning his ability to be a long term corner as a professional.

The DMN's Rick Gosselin, who has front office connections out the wazoo for the draft, said in a radio interview the one knock of Patrick Peterson is that at 220, NFL people felt he'd need to transition to corner in 2-3 years.

Peterson scored a 9 on his combine Wonderlic, single scores are considered to mean illiteracy, so some teams will be concerned about his ability to learn NFL defensive concepts.

The Cowboys have no doubt done their homework and Les Miles being our former TE coach has to have been a nice plus in that regard.

If part of the worry is weighing 220, why can't Peterson slim down 10-15 pounds?

I've said all along he could make a terrific safety, but not because I think he's too heavy to play CB. He'd have a larger impact there as well.

Oh Hos you went there. Everyone who went to go see magic play at Michigan st. knew they were seeing a once in a lifetime talent play, not really the same for PP. Do you think magic would have scored a 9 on the Wonderlic?

So we draft off of just wonderlic?

Doesn't matter his size if he can move the way he can.

I wouldn't be disappointed at all with him at #9, but I don't see him as a superstar either. IMO, he was clearly no better than the 3rd best defensive player in the SEC and the 3rd best prospect. I'd take Dareus or Fairley over him any day. Still, I'd rather have one of him than 5 Princes.

No you don't draft based on one aspect, but a 9 is really bad.

Edit, on reading a second time, I see you mean the part about stretching out his hips for hours each week. Yes, I stand by the fact that a great corner doesn't have to do that. That's hardly some outrageous statement. I seriously doubt Deion or Mike Haynes, who this guy is supposed to be, had to worry about stretching their hips for hours each week just to stay flexible enough to stay at corner.
Meh. Deion could shake a leg and be ready to go. God given ability like nothing I've ever seen.

I don't care what a wonderlic score was. I never have. Do you have a point, or just want to waste my time?
