The Cowboys QB is sidelined for the rest of 2013 season.

The Dallas Cowboys managed to keep up their smokescreen all the way until today's press conference with Jason Garrett. Hoping to gain some competitive advantage by making the Philadelphia Eagles guess about the probability of Tony Romo playing in Sunday's NFC East Championship Game, the Cowboys insisted that Romo's season may not be over. The ruse likely didn't fool anybody and the Cowboys cast it aside today. Jason Garrett announced the inevitable, Romo is done for this season and had back surgery this morning.

"The procedure happened this morning," Garrett said. "We felt the surgery went well. Tony should be able to come home later today and start his rehabilitation.

"He'll start his road to recovery, sooner rather than later. We're completely confident he will rehab and come back at 100 percent."

We can now focus fully on Kyle Orton, the man who will lead the Cowboys on Sunday and help determine their playoff fate for the 2013 season.

So much for Tony Romo playing in Week 17.

The Cowboys said Friday that Romo has undergone back surgery and has been placed on the IR list, ending his season with a week to go and with the team set to play the Eagles for the NFC East title on Sunday and a spot in the postseason.

This means that Kyle Orton, who hasn't started a game since 2011, will face Philadelphia with the newly-signed Jon Kitna as the backup quarterback.

"We spent the week exhausting all options regarding Tony's situation, treatment, rehab all the different things. We consulted a lot of different people on this," Garrett told reporters. "We just felt like, as we discussed it, as yesterday wore on, that this was the best decision for him and our organization moving forward. We felt like it was better to have this done sooner rather than later."

News first broke earlier this week that Romo had suffered a herniated disk that would require surgery. Romo had hurt his back in Week 16 vs. the Commanders, but he still managed to throw a game-winning 10-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to get his team to this winner-take-all contest vs. Philadelphia.

Garrett maintained that Romo was day-to-day, but he did allow, "If Tony can't play, let's stick Kyle in there and go forward."

Later in the week, the Cowboys tried to make Romo's playing status more vague, suggesting that Romo could actually be cleared to play.

"It was the right decision for him and the right decision for the organization," Garrett said. "He has started his road to recovery."

Garrett said the decision to have the surgery was made late Thursday, mainly because Romo was in so much pain.

"We felt the surgery went well. Tony should be able to come home later today and start his rehabilitation," Garrett said. "... We're completely confident he will rehab and come back at 100 percent."

The Cowboys (8-7) play the Eagles (9-6) on Sunday, with the winner clinching the NFC East title and a playoff spot.

Kyle Orton will start for Dallas, and newly acquired Jon Kitna will be the backup.

Really rotten luck for Dallas.
But they can win this game vs Philly anyway.
Just don't ask me to bet on it.

Jason Garrett: Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has back surgery, placed on IR

IRVING -- Tony Romo's season is officially over.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback underwent surgery on his back Friday morning, head coach Jason Garrett announced.

He will be placed on injured reserve. The news comes only two days before the Cowboys are set to play Philadelphia in a do-or-die game that will determine whether Dallas wins the NFC East title or misses the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

Backup quarterback Kyle Orton, who has thrown 15 passes since in the regular season since signing with the Cowboys in March 2012, will be the starter for the Cowboys.

"We spent the week exhausting all options in regards to Tony's situation -- treatment, rehab, all of the different things," Garrett said. "We consulted a lot of different people on this. And we just felt like, as we discussed it, as yesterday wore on, that this was the best decision for him and our organization moving forward. We felt like it was better to have this done sooner rather than later."

Dr. Drew Dossett, an orthopedic surgeon who removed a cyst from Romo's back in the spring, performed the operation. Sources said that Romo had suffered a herniated disk that gave him trouble at the end of Dallas' 24-23 victory over Washington last Sunday.
