If you are a Cowboys fan scratching your head right now after day 1 on the NFL draft I do not at all blame you. I can't blame you for feeling Dallas ignored need along the OL and at FS either. After months of hashing out that Dallas would look to those areas they simply did not.

And while I hate to scare you, it seems it was by design. Dallas was quite willing to share that they thought TE was the value in round 2. They claimed to be ready for anything and it appears they were. They made two seperate trades down to garner a late 4th, extra 6th and extra 7th. We'll get to tomorrow later but it shouldn't be a snoozefest with all those picks.

Recapping the picks:

round 1: 18. I felt the move here was to trade down. If not then Lawson or Carpenter was your guy. Dallas essentially stated they felt drafting Carpenter allowed them to take the best player and not have to adjust anyone else. The implication is they felt Lawson could have only played where DeMarcus Ware is earmarked and thus would have meant moving Ware across the field. Its always hard to read PArcells but it is not hard to suggest he'll draftt he known and he knows Bobby Carpenter. Parcells follows the kids of his ex-players and coaches. That pick was pretty easy to call really. Gosselin had Carpenter rated at 18 so it was an even value for Dallas.

round 2: 49. I thought Marcus McNeill was the pick here. He's a big RT type. Some question about his back but he supposedly passed all the physicals. Dallas opted to trade down with the Jets which was odd only in that it did not bring the return of a 4th rounder they were openly coveting.

53: Anthony Fasano. Rather shocking honestly to see Dallas go TE here. Witten is a young Pro Bowler and we just signed a blocking TE in free agency away from the defending NFC Champs. Jones offered that Fasano was the highest rated player and they had a plan for him. That plan was to go to a 2 TE set and balance the formation so defenses couldn't overload either side. TO and Fasano on one side and Witten and Glenn on the other. Once explained it makes some sense. Fasano certainly presents a threat the Cowboys sometimes fullback did not. They wanted to ditcht he fullback for a while and Fasano allows them to. Both he and Witten have played h-back and Fasano knows Parcells basic offense because thats what Charlie Weis employs at Notre Dame. Gosselin had Fason as his 54th rated prospect and Dallas selected him at 53 so again fairly even. Even more though, Goose broke Fasano down and compared him to ex-Parcells love child, Mark Bavaro.

round 3: 80. Here I am expecting they really have to go FS. Maybe they can go OT but most are gone and Pat Watkins, Ko Simpson and others are there for the taking. With the 3 or 4 of the OT's going off the board Dallas opted to trade down again and pick up that elusive 4th rounder.

92: Here I am thinking they moved down to set up a FS or OT pick. But they fooled me again with a massive DE from Grambling named Jason Hatcher. He's got measurables for days at 6'7", 285 pounds and running 4.8's. I wish I could offer some great insight but I have never watched him at all. Dallas did say they drafted him to play DT and think he can easily hold 30 more pounds of muscle. He seems a slightly bigger version of Chris Canty. Bill Parcells just can not get enough big, nasty DL. Goose had Hatcher ranked 88th and we took him 92nd so he was a solid value.

Jeff Ireland has a short track record here but a glowing one thus far. I'd say he deserves the benefit of the doubt with regards to Hatcher who very few have seen play. That doesn't mean there isn't at least some head scratching.

Dallas will very likely plug in Carpenter and Fasano as starting players in 2006. I can see that as a big plus when Carpenter is replacing a steady but smallish Al Singleton who is coming off of major injury and Fasano replaces a fullback we were always reluctant to play anyways. Having watched a handful of both Ohio State and Notre Dame games I am pleased by the talent of both those guys. Hatcher is an unknown for me but I'll trust his ranking and consider him a long-term project.

Tomorrow promises to reward some of the more annoyed Cowboys faithful.
Right now Dallas is slated to pick late 4th, mid 5th, two times in each the 6th and 7th rounds. And more than a couple of players who fans were calling for are still there including:

Darnell Bing, Safety of USC.
Ko Simpson FS of South Carolina.
Max Jean-Gilles OG of Georgia.
Demetrius Williams, WR of Oregon.
Gabe Watson, NT of Michigan.
Jonathon Scott, OT of Texas.
Rodrique Wright, DT of Texas.
Calvin Lowry, FS of Penn State.

So try not to jump off any cliffs and I promise this team will be a solid group in 2006.

good post...I'm scratching my head, but now that we know we will be running two TE's sets a lot it makes a lot more sense.

I'm guessing Coleman was not cutting it as he may be gone.

Are we thinking Hatcher as NT with 20-30 more lbs or DE???

I was thinking DE with is pass rushing abilities, but adding 20 lbs puts him at 305....

???

agree as well. let's give BP and Ireland the benefit of the doubt on these guys. Not the media savy picks per say, but only the coaches know the plan and have seen all the film. only time will tell, but let's all take step back before jumping off the deep end.

I keep hearing speculation about it, but did Jerry or Ireland say that Hatcher was for sure drafted to transition to DT?

They stated he was drafted to play DT.

He was always listed as a 3-4 DE but apparently here we like him as a DT. Then again we use 300 pound Ferguson as a nose tackle and it works. BP just doesn't like fat guys. Guess he hasn't been talking to Ray Lewis about the value of fatties at DT, lol.

Hatcher is 6'6" and 285 on most boards but he'll be 300 on the official team list:) I could see him at 6'6" and 320 anchoring the middle. Tall as heck NT though. Hope he gets low.

Thanks for the answer and good original post. Do you think he'll be near that weight this season, or is it going to be next season before he is officially at DT playing weight?

Sorry JT I just don't see what you see and I really do not anticipate any draft saviors in the second day. Once again our O will stink and we will be burned when the FS plays deep center field. Bill is the anti-Jimmy and maybe in a year or two we will invest in some O. Or not, bad habits are hard to break.

Honestly I couldn't tell you.

I can tell you right now we have 2 DTs on the roster. If nothing else Hatcher becomes the inactive 3rd DT.

Would it be a good value to have you're 3rd rounder inactive all year? Nope. But how many 285 pound guys run a 4.8? This kid is a great athlete who just may end up a steal.

Yikes! The O will stink?

Even with TO?

We did add Fabini at OT and with a healthy Flo/Fabini combo thats actually a top 10 OT starting duo. Lots of folks poo-poo Fabini but the guy was a Left Tackle the past however many years as the Jets best OL. I'll certainly grant you that our health luck with OL has sucked as has BP's attempted OL draftees for the most part.

BUT, I'd have to disagree with your sentiment that BP drafts less OL then Jimmy did. Jimmy inherited Tui and Newt and he didnt draft Larry Allen. He drafted some OL but they were 3rd rounders or below. BP loves OL and prior to here has always hit on them.

I am concerned about Free Safety but Marcus Coleman and Justin Beriault enter the mix to start there. A lot of the guy we have mentionned such as Pat Watkins and Ko Simpson are still on the board and could enter that mix as well.

Our offense was fine last year with Flozell and Petitti as a rookie so I'll take my chances with Flo and Fabini. After D'Brickashaw I dont think any OT would have started as a rookie for us.

If you listen to Irelands interview it says we drafted the BPA on the Cowboys board not the Kiper draft board. It sounds like we got the players we wanted along with picking up extra draft picks. It sounds like in the 3rd they moved down 12 spots and then had to decide which player they wanted to take because they had 2 guys at that spot that were equal on their board. The decided on the big guy and still hope for the second one tomorrow. I would say in the War room that Dallas draft day is according to plan regardless of the fans not happy.
I guess I was excited over the last few years with the big name players that fell to us but know most of those big steals arent even on the team so I am behind the blue collar type players without the thug problems.

Good post JT.

FWIW, Mike Mayock didn't think a lot of McNeal. He didn't like the fact that he isn't a knee-bender...said he bent like an 80 year old grandmother.
