Whoever we pick, they have to able to play and impact the games this year, Carp did not do that last year enough, it might have been the difference between going somewhere playoff wise. I honestly don't care who we pick and don't pretend to know who the best player available is, but it's got to be somebody who can do it now, our window is closing soon, Jerrah isn't getting any youger as am I..

I think it will be difficult for any rookie to come in and take over a starting spot at this stage. I would hope they can contribute but outright starting from day 1 I don't think so

I really can not say that I agree with this line of thought. I personally believe that the team and really the fan base are at a point of transition. I remember in the old days we would draft players and never expect them to be starters or even play for us in the first year. We draft to develop and it worked for a very long time. Now, with the dynamics of Cap and FA, the time frames have changed a bit but I still believe that you draft players and allow them to develop. In the past, we were forced to draft guys and play them immediatly because when we drafted them, they became the most talented players at there positions we had on our roster. I don't believe that's the case anymore. We are a good enough team that we are not going to be drafting guys who are coming in as better players then we already have on our roster. This is not a bad thing IMO. We are a very young team still. We have plenty of time, IMO, to draft well and continue to develop. If we do this right, there is no reason we need to be concerned about a window closing. We just need to imployee sound decision making and good strong leadership from the top down. The rest, IMO, will take care of itself. I am much more interested in drafting guys that I believe can be Pro Bowl quality players in 3 to 4 years rather then impact players this season. At pick 22, I just don't believe we are going to be drafting the kind of player that can come in and start for a playoff team from day one. That leads to reaching for players all too many times. If we happen to get lucky and that kind of player is there, then OK, I'm happy to draft him. If not, lets get a good player and develop him. In that way, we will continue to compete for years to come.

JMO.

very little chance of any rookie we take having much of an impact this year. if we go wr do you think he will beat out t.o. or glenn? not a chance and likely won't be the 3rd wr with crayton .
if you go cb he might have the most playing time as reeves played quite a bit last year. if you go ot he may never see the filed at all.
this years draft is more about getting good players for the future and depending on the position the future could be next season

I'm going to continue the theme that rookies this year will not be impact players, but building blocks. Is it possible one could come in and be an impact player? Sure, but it isn't likely. This draft is about stabilizing this team across the board. The impact will be for the future when a couple of our older veterans begin the process of steping aside.

The only way I see a rookie making an impact this year is on special teams .

Whatever player we draft in round 1 (assuming we stay in the 1st) should be capable of starting on any team in my opinion. Football is a violent sport and injuries are the norm therefore a 1st rounder should be able to step in without a significant dropoff. The only excuse for that player not starting should be that the person in front of him is just too good and flat out beat him out in camp.

I have no problem drafting a WR in round 1 (although I think there is value at that position well into round 3). I acknowledge that no rookie WR, possibly even Calvin Johnson, would start in Dallas over T.O. or T. Glenn. However, if one of our 30 something wideouts is injured I fully expect Meachem, or Bowe or Jarrett to be starting caliber when stepping in to replace the vet. The same applies at CB or FS or NT or OT or DE/OLB.

Our 1st player picked should be capable of starting on nearly all other teams in the league but is relegated to being a backup ONLY because of the talent in front of him. Development is great but being surrounded by top flight talent always seems to aid in a players development on every level. We need to draft the best talent on the board no matter the position.

Very good point and I agree

Thanks Doomsday101. I like the moves the 'Boys have made this offseason but still believe we need a strong draft across the board, especially on the first day. This team is talented but it is still the same squad that limped through the final month of the season. Not too many changes have been made. More "A" list talent is needed if Dallas wants to win a playoff game and surpass the Eagles in the NFC East or the Bears and Saints in the conference.

True, I do think it will be hard to get a draft pick who can walk in from day 1 and over take a starting role but if called on you do expect them to be able to come in and produce.

The Cowboys need to concern themselves with raising their overall talent level across the board, not worry themselves with "instant impact". FWIW, we drafted Carpenter for "instant impact".

Antonio Anderson played a lot as a rookie and made an instant impact ... he also proved to be a horrible draft pick.

i never thought I would live long enough to hear the saints mentioned with the elite of the conference... is the world ending??

Crazy thought huh? I don't think they were a fluke though. They have a ton of offensive talent.

I want a CB or WR who can help the return game and help erase the painful memory of Skyler Green.

Back in the early 90s they had a great D; they won 13 games one season- but that was when the 49rs were great and won 13 as well and had the tie breaker. Problem was they could never get the O going-could not get a decent QB either. Saints have only ever had one really good QB in their whole history prior to Brees.

I disagree with this. I think The Boys are set, from Offense to Defense with their starters and main back up components. I do not think this team needs or will go out looking for a "right away contributor". It would be nice of we did, but i cant see where that would be. Except maybe if Ellis cant go and Carp (aint the olb we need)...then we would need to fill the OLB spot, and even then i am not sold that Burnett cant be that guy, I think he could be if given the chance.....

On Offense, i cant see where we would fit a guy in right away unless it was Calvin Johnson, who we are not getting anyway. No one else would be starting and/or contributing right away.

Just my opinion on that.........

EDIT: or on another note, draft Revis and get rid of Henry somehow or make him a FS....so i guess i could see Revis or another top notch CB starting.....specially if we continue to get pressure on the QB and become an attacking front 7...that would make life easier for our DB's and Revis has the speed to play on that dangerous edge.

What he said.

Does that we mean we're back to drafting backups again?

Heavens no!! Rather, we simply don't have the glaring weaknesses to reasonably predict a rookie grabbed late in the 1st could unseat a starter right out of the blocks. Not impossible, but not likely, and certainly shouldn't be our draft strategy. Take the BPA.

With the talent we have on this team you might get a few draft picks that could start early.

However we are not as bad as we were a few years ago when we had to draft 3 DBs and HOPE one of them would start because we were so bad off in that area.

That is a good thing going into the draft knowing that you do not have to draft and hit on a player that needs to become a starter right off the bat.

If they do become a starter right off the bat than that is gravy because you feel he is better than a current starter. Before we did not have as talented of a team as we do now so that is going to be harder to accomplish.

I think realistically what you hope to do is draft a player that might not be a starter but can contribute and get some minutes on the field to help in some fashion.

For example. Ted Ginn Jr.

Here is the type of player that would probably not be a starter now HOWEVER he could give you minutes in the Return game and be a threat. He can contribute in that area and help your team.

He could also Go in as a WR on occasion in 3-4 WR sets. At worst he could be a deep threat or decoy in those situations to help free up other receivers.

So he may not be a starter but he could still contribute while learning the system and adapting to the NFL.

There may be a DB out there that can contribute on returns or other ST units (A.Ross for example). He may also be able to get some time in games in nickle situations. He may not be a starter but he can help the team and develop in the NFL.

Every first rounder does not have to be an immediate starter. If you require your first rounder to be an immediate starter than it probably says a few things about your team at that time.

It says you don't have quality talent at that position already, you can not wait to develop the player first, you drafted purely for need, or your teams record was so bad because of lack of existing talent that you drafted in the top 10.

Now to be fair...maybe you do get a player in the other half of the first round that turns out to be so talented that he just blows the other players at his position away and winds up being the starter right off the bat.

So I am not saying it does not happen, but it is not a NEED TO HAPPEN situation right now with our team...and that IMO says a great deal about the change in our team over the last few years.
