The defense was largely fool's gold. Their points allowed stat led fans to believe they were a better defense than they were. But more advanced stats showed they had clear weaknesses and a good QB would exploit that.

The secondary and pass rush need upgrading.

I think losing Swain was big, especially with Hanna being gone the entire season. I hope both come back healthy, particularly Swaim.

Still need to draft another TE

Curtis Samuel and Travin Dural
Add Cooper Kupp Eastern Washington to the mix at WR. I really like both receivers from LSU, this might be another great draft for us in 2017 even picking at #28.

We need to get a real backup QB and not depend on Sanchez to win us games if Dak goes down for long period of time. The way Dak plays, there will more more chance he gets injured. We need to prepare for that.

Past 10 years we had a bad season following playoff bound season. The main reason for that was due to Romo going down with injuries.

I have been thinking about that too. During the Romo years we always followed a good year with a stinker. I think last year Romo's health was the biggest thing, but I also think Jerry tries to find FA "deals" by getting a-holes like Hardy, Tank Johnson, etc. which ruins our chemistry from the year before. I hope the FO sees the need to build for the long term and avoids FA's that could ruin what we are building.

Something I have been thinking about. I really like Jones and I think he was solid for much of the the year, but it seems like he struggled as the year wore on. What if we moved him back to CB? He has the physical traits to be a Sherman type CB and generally Safeties are generally a relatively cheap buy in FA. The fact that Heath has led our team in interceptions that last two years tells me a ball hawk safety would be really help out and it would give us Jones, Scandrick, and Brown at CB heading into the draft.

Heartbreaking loss in a disgusting manner. Im not going to say the refs had it in for the Cowboys because i dont believe that. But i will say these refs decided the game. They impacted the game on bad and missed calls on both sides. Old fat refs who dont see too good or who cant keep up. The NFL needs to bring in a fresh crop because these refs dont cut it. Bad officiating is deciding too many games in todays NFL.

I will say its also disgusting how fans give up on this team too easily. But thats all ill say.

Theres alot of things to be really excited about with this young talented team. IM not one in the crowd that believes this defense is bad. They had rust and it showed early. Just like the offense had rust and that showed. The defense allowed 13pts in the final 46mins of the game and gave up 169 yrds in that time. After that slow start this defense played as good as you can expect. Just like the offense made a push to tie it. Just a great QB made it happen.

Add in a healthy Lawrence, Jaylon and Tapper in 2017 and this defense is better. And add in a new crop of rookies and get it rolling.

I sincerly think this team found a diamond in the rough with Heath. It just seems like the more he plays the better he gets. I think we found this era's Bill Bates. Those that remember Bates started his career like Heath on special teams a seldom used guy but worked and got better and turned into a very good S for this team. I see alot of that in Heath.

This team needs to draft atleast 2 CBs IMO. As much as i like Claiborne his body just cant be trusted. Scandrick is a step slower after his injury, but maybe he is back to form in 2017. Brown i like but i think this team can find better. If i had a say i would go CB before DE.

I cant wait to see Jaylon Smith teamed up with Lee. That is going to be a whole lot of speed and tenacity roaming the intermediate area.

Think today we saw just how avg Dallas DTs are. GB doubled and triple teamed Irving and there was still nothing they could do to get pressure on Rodgers. If i was Dallas i would go after Sheldon Richardson. Dallas clearly had interest in him, but they just werent paying the price NY wanted. I can see them going after him. Richardson would transform what this DL is.

I liked what i saw from Dak in college and i followed him during the draft process and knew this team had interest. I mocked him all last yr in the 4th all the way back at the SR bowl. When Romo went down i didnt even have any worry. IM not going to say i knew Dak was a franchise QB. But there was just something about him that i saw even in college where he just never got fazed by the game. This team found its future league MVP.

Something has lit a fire in Dez and i think it was Chris Carter. Seems when he was so public bout Dez not running good routes which we all knew he turned on the lights. Because he's running alot better routes now. It was against Gunter but it was still a difference in how he ran.

Hopefully this teams future at RT is Green because Free is on his last tread. Cleary and Cooper i think will be fine in Dallas as depth and add in looney. Green and Collins round out this teams OL for 2017.

Interested to see what happens with TW and Butler in 2017. LIke most i think TW will get more money somewhere else. The guy catches alot of TDs. Butler i think can be brought back for a small deal. Dallas needs to draft a WRs. The guys i like are Curtis Samuel, and JuJu early and Travin Dural late. Dural IMO can be a huge steal if he can tweak his game and dedicate himself fully.

I think Rico needs to speed up his learning curve because i think Witten is ready to call it a career. Think with that Escobar will be brought back and finally given some time on the field. I dont want to hear how he cant block, while thats trust most of the time, Witten wasnt really a good blocker this yr. He killed alot of drives with holding and missed alot of blocks like the one on Micahs sack on Dak today.

Dallas needs to find a backup because sanchez is garbage. He might be a nice coach one day but backup he is not.

RB is not even a concern But i think Dallas will draft one. McFadden is a FA morris i dont think wants to be in Dallas and hes not very good and Dunbar is eh. Even if they keep Morris thats only two.

And those of you who are still on the whole this team has no caproom rant. Save the dramatics and know this team will have atleast 20mil cap room when the new season starts in march. Restructured contracts for Tyron and Fred free up 18mil alone.

Overall this team needs some parts and needs to tweak a few things here and there but by no means is team going to be middle of the pack. This is a contender for a long time coming. All fans need to do is be loyal and enjoy the ride.

Very nice post. Agree on all points but I do think Witten will saddle up for one last ride

Keep in mind concerning the Cap.

Whether we are in cap trouble or easily out of cap trouble with a move or too....Stephen has already said we will not be big spenders in 2017 FA.
They have turned the corner on that method and seem to be sticking to budget friendly FAs and not breaking the bank. I don't know if they would spend enough to bring in a top level FA Pass Rusher or DB.

I agree with a lot you said.

I don't agree that this defense isn't bad. I think they are and have been for a long time. I would like to see what Lawrence, J. Smith, Tapper, Irving, M. Collins and some other young guys could do next year. Though I think the only one with elite potential is Smith.

I do like what Heath brings. He's cheap, plays hard, is good on special teams, and makes plays occasionally. But I don't know if he'll ever be starter material. I do remember when we first signed Heath as a UDFA was the same year we drafted the other white safety, Matt Johnson. Everyone was gushing over Johnson's measurables, but Heath actually had better measurables. He's surprisingly possesses elite physical ability. He's also still young at only 25. Would be nice if we could force an athletic starting duo at safety with Jones and Heath, but I think this values Church's leadership ability too much to part ways.

I disagree that we can do better than Brown. His measurables are up there with 1st round CBs, he played very well for a rookie, and he doesn't seem to have any off the field problems. Really can't find a better guy than that. I think we got a major steal. Besides, I don't want to be drafting any DBs in the 1st round. If we can get a 1st round talent like Brown in the 6th round, that's awesome. I'd try to bring back Claiborne for another one-year deal on the cheap. I'd also like to bring back Carr since he's extremely reliable health-wise, as long as we no longer guarantee him a starting position. Give me Claiborne and Brown as starts and Scandrick in the nickel.

Hopefully Jaylon Smith can get healthy and pair up with Lee for the next few years before taking over for Lee. He'd be like getting a top 5 pick in the draft. And hopefully we can turn Romo into another high pick.

I also want us to address DT some more. I like what we have in Collins. He's one of the few bright spots on the defense. He's a big body but also has natural pass rushing skills. He could probably play 1DT given his size. I'd like to get another player to pair up with him to give us a dominant interior DL. That should make things a lot easier for our edge rushers too. I think it's easier to find a DT in the draft or free agency than an elite RDE.

I also want to see Free gone. I want to see what we do with L. Collins. If this team views him as a possible RT, then we definitely have to resign Leary. If not, then I say we go with the younger and cheaper Collins over Leary. I really don't want to see us spend another early pick on OL if we address RT in the draft, but I also don't want to see Free back next year. I just don't know if we can rely on Green.

I don't want Brice Butler anywhere near this team next year. He's easily replaceable. He's also not the type of guy who looks like he can play winning football. He's basically the opposite of Heath. While Heath is making plays in the limited chances he gets, Butler is making mistakes. Same goes for Williams. I really don't know how I feel about Williams. I'd rather move on and get someone more consistent. But Williams has a lot more talent than Butler.

We need to do something about finding Witten's replacement. Our job of finding our TE of the future has been the only thing more pathetic than our job of building a solid D-line. I don't know what we'll do when Witten is gone.

Sanchez is horrible. I'd rather not spend the $5 million we'll end up saving for Romo by signing a crappy backup QB. Rather go with someone like Kellen Moore. At least he won us a game last year.

I think drafting another RB would be a great idea. Every draft has guys like Ajayi and Rawls sitting there in the later rounds. Our key to success is our O-line and running game. We already have a deep O-line. We need some depth at RB so that our season doesn't derail if Zeke misses a few games. We also need someone to keep defenses honest those times that Zeke goes to the sideline to sit out a few plays and catch his breath. The defenses know we're gonna pass when we trot Dunbar out there. The Seahawks have Thomas Rawls, Alex Collins and CJ Prosise on their roster. Those are guys many fans wanted us to draft last year to be our starting RB after Murray left. The Seahawks have all three of them. Imagine if we had one of those guys as our backup RB.
So we have a 13-3 team, and your response is to replace most of them?

I agree mostly but we do need to get quality FA. I think after a good season, we go into "We just had a good season so we are fine." mode and not do much to take the team to the next level. This strategy is OK if you consistently draft well but we don't. This year we need to spend on getting a quality FA pass rusher.

Seattle built their defense through draft picks AND FA. We need to do the same.

Yea. I am good with smart FA moves, I just don't want to bring some guy in that is going to disrupt what we have going like Hardy. I think Parcells was really good at smart FA. He brought in smart, high character vets that improved the talent level a bit but also improved the locker room without costing a ton.

I didn't say replace most of them. A lot of them are free agents so though we will have to address them (that includes our O-line and especially our secondary). If it were up to me, I'd resign all the guys in the secondary, go with the same LBers and hope Smith can be something special. The only significant changes I would make would be on D-line. That unit needs a serious makeover. McClain is a free agent so we'll have to address 1DT. I'd prefer to stay with Collins at 3DT instead of putting T. Crawford back in at 3DT and sliding Collins over to 1DT. I think two big bodied DTs with pass rushing ability could give us a dominant interior D-line that could help the edges. A free agent like Sheldon Richardson (as someone else mentioned) would be nice. I expect Collins to be much improved next year. He's my favorite player on the D besides Lee. Now, regarding DE, I don't expect much good to be available in the draft and free agency. Elite DEs go top 5 in the draft and usually never even enter free agency. That's why I think we'd be better off adding to DT and hoping it helps the edges. Of course, I'd also address DE. I'd try to trade up and get a stud in the 1st round. Then I'd try to add another solid free agent. Then as far as offense goes, WRs Williams and I believe Butler are free agents. Neither is worth resigning in my opinion. And I'd like some more RB depth. I think those areas can be addressed later in the draft.

Butler must go
Does Heath suck or not? he doesnt start, only plays if theres and injury, but someone chatted that he runs a sub 4.5 40, leads in INT and was everywhere yesterday. i think we keep him in part because of his special teams play.

We're seeing young corners come in and play very well from the start but not so much DEnds so if we do spend I hope it's on a DE
