My Feelings: Trade down with the Rams to #14 and take Gabe Carimi. There is just something that tells me 5 years down the road Gabe Carimi will be a better NFL Offensive Lineman than Tyron Smith. I also like the fact we would most likely pickup an additional 3rd Rounder from the Rams and a high 3rd Rounder at that. I truly think this is the best move for the Cowboys.

I do like the idea of a trade down. I think Carimi is very safe at worst he is Marc Colombo at best he is Jon Jansen. Tyron could be D'brickashaw Ferguson or he could be Mike Williams. However, I think a 3rd is too little. I think we must squeeze the 2nd from the Rams. Say our 1st and 4th for the Rams 1st and 2nd. If they believe Julio is the best WR in draft and they want that big weapon for their franchise QB then they gotta pay for it, if not we stay put and pick. If we can end up with 3 of the top 50 players you gotta do it.

2 points:

1. we trade down only if our scouting dept feels that there is no significant drop off between smith and carimi/costanzo/sherrod. if there is, we dont trade down.

2. if i am trading down to 14, then i want a 2nd not 3rd because we are for sure losing our shot at smith who will go before the 14th pick

I'm of the opposite opinion on Smith and Carimi. I think Carimi MAY be the better player THIS SEASON. Five years down the road (when Smith actually grows into his body and perfects his technique), he'll be a perennial Pro Bowler and Carimi will be JAG.

You are probably correct in all but one assesment. Smith may be better 5 years down the line, but I don't think Carimi will be JAG. He will be a solid starter somewhere.

14 for Carimi is way to soon. If were trading back then trade back and get more picks than just an extra 3rd. Trade back into the early 20s and get a extra 2nd or a extra 3rd and 4th.

I agree with you super8. 14 is too high for Carimi. Mid maybe early 20's is where i would be comfortable taking him.

I don't think Carimi will be a JAG. I think he will be a solid RT in this league for a long time. Smith could be better in the end, but there is nothing wrong with trading down and picking up a solid RT since we already have a LT.

The question to the debate between these two players comes down to window of opportunity IMO. Lets assume that Smith will be the better player in 5 years. Will the Cowboys be in a position to compete for the Championship in 5 years? I don't know the answer to that.
