Ellis was an anchor. He was a well-regarded pass rusher out of college, but there were many who doubted he would be much of one in the NFL. People were right to doubt, as it turned out, but nonetheless, he was a solid dependable DE starter who had to be accounted for. He would have been a great pick-up at #28... but yes, not so much at #8, and moreover, in light of the fact that we passed on Moss, that's what people naturally remember.
Based on what I've seen and read, Dunlap represents Charlton's ceiling. He won't just be able to walk onto the field and be that or anywhere near it. That's our most hopeful outcome here.
Hardy? Don't see that one at all. He's a bit shorter and a bit heavier than Charlton. Different personality, and Hardy as I recall anyhow was regarded as inconsistent in college, whereas Charlton gets some credit for getting more productive each season.
Tuck? Maybe.
But no, I'll stick with Ellis for now. That's the profile I'm seeing and most likely career trajectory. And I'm okay with that. And... having said that... also won't be the least bit surprised to see us draft another DE who is more of a project, but who can conceivably develop into a pass-rush specialist in a year or two... not unlike how we approached drafting a QB last April.
