My first take: Taco Charlton reminds me a whole lot of Greg Ellis

Greg Ellis was the 8th pick overall and will always be remembered as the guy we took over Randy Moss. Ellis was a decent pro but never lived up to a top ten draft selection. A year later, we double downed on UNC DE's that weren't great taking Ebenezer Ekuban in the 1st. Outside of Jerry, no one making decisions on draft choices is still involved in the process.

Charlton is an ideal anchor (strongside end) and IMO, very similar to Carlos Dunlap. Dunlap had a DUI his last year at Florida and went middle 2nd round. He's been a very productive player for the Bengals.

I don't think he's an elite blindside rusher but he's a very good pass rusher for an anchor. Considering who was available at 28, I'm happy with the pick.

Solid take Chris....

And after letting this soak in...I can see the reasoning. Question I have now is...where does that leave Crawford? I think they move him back to DT.

Not a RDE, complete head scratcher of a pick. Could have had a similar, maybe even more upside, guy like Tanoh Kpassagnon in 3rd.
Much more upside as a pass rusher and faster... I guess they could still pick him up in the 3rd-4th. Irving Taco and Kpass would be nuts considering their sizes

Ellis was an anchor. He was a well-regarded pass rusher out of college, but there were many who doubted he would be much of one in the NFL. People were right to doubt, as it turned out, but nonetheless, he was a solid dependable DE starter who had to be accounted for. He would have been a great pick-up at #28... but yes, not so much at #8, and moreover, in light of the fact that we passed on Moss, that's what people naturally remember.

Based on what I've seen and read, Dunlap represents Charlton's ceiling. He won't just be able to walk onto the field and be that or anywhere near it. That's our most hopeful outcome here.

Hardy? Don't see that one at all. He's a bit shorter and a bit heavier than Charlton. Different personality, and Hardy as I recall anyhow was regarded as inconsistent in college, whereas Charlton gets some credit for getting more productive each season.

Tuck? Maybe.

But no, I'll stick with Ellis for now. That's the profile I'm seeing and most likely career trajectory. And I'm okay with that. And... having said that... also won't be the least bit surprised to see us draft another DE who is more of a project, but who can conceivably develop into a pass-rush specialist in a year or two... not unlike how we approached drafting a QB last April.

I have no idea whether Charlton will work out or not, but I'm always puzzled by people dismissing guys as LE types. Yeah, we need a RDE who can rush the passer. No doubt there. But am I missing where we have some sort of elite, locked in talent at LDE?

if he is as good as Ellis I will be happy but you just don't let a R Foster get by you

how many full seasons has S Lee played for us one maybe two

to me a bad pick

Jerry can not pick FOOTBALL PLAYERS

RLLIS OBER MOSS

Foster

Sources Tell Us "He's not a MIKE linebacker. I think he's a pure run-and-hit WILL linebacker with good cover talent. I'm worried about what his medicals will show because he's had some issues with stingers during his career. I have a higher grade on him than I had on Reggie Ragland. Better pro potential to me." -- NFC director of scouting

NFL Comparison Bobby Wagner

Bottom Line Foster is a vicious hitter with elite playmaking range and an ability to toggle between 225 and 240 pounds. Athleticism gives him cover ability that former teammate Reggie Ragland never possessed. Has Pro Bowl potential as a 3-4 inside linebacker or a 4-3 weak-side linebacker, but concerns over his medical history could be a consideration, according to some teams.
