My rules for signing a free agent to a significant contract.

1. Availablilty. Can't always be injured, have suspension issues, drug/alcohol/diva problems. Need the guy I paid on the field for 15+ games a season.

2. Age. Not signing anyone older than 27 unless they are one of the top 3 players at their position and can have a major impact on the outcome of games.

3. Ability. Great football players have the ability to play any position. I hate system, scheme guys. Guys like Sean Lee can play. Doesn't matter if it's a 4-3, 3-4, outside, inside, in the box, deep zone, give me the guy with the ability to line up and play football.

I like your rules, but there is one major problem here......................

A player that is durable, young, and can play multiple positions is going to get offered way more money than what the Cowboys want to spend.

Most worthwhile veteran free agents want to play for teams that offer one or both of two things: they they are attracted to the teams that offer big money and winning with the most consistency. In the grand scheme of things, we no longer afford them the required promise of assuring that nowadays.
