After rewatching the game I have to say I am really impressed.
One thing people aren't going to see on the surface is how successful the 2 TE system worked today. All our tight ends blocked really well today, and that helped tremendously in the running game. Escobar played one hell of a game, not just on that touchdown, but his overall game is clearly improving, and the Cowboys want him to be a red zone threat.
I couldn't help but think about how much our defense looked like Kansas City's last week. We really limited the run after the catch. Our guys were always there to make the hit or the tackle. And there wasn't much deep for them, especially once they became one dimensional. Morris Claiborne looked like a different player out there. He no longer looked soft and timid. He crashed to the ball, and I loved it. That is what we need corners and safeties to do in this defense. I think the combination we have in the secondary is really starting to come across with the addition of Wilcox into the starting lineup.
Hayden and Selvie are having quite the impact for us, but I can't help but think about what we can do when we can add Spencer and Ratliff, not because Hayden and Selvie aren't playing really well, but simply because that is a huge boost to the overall rotation. We would be wise to take things easy with Spencer going further. We're going to need both of them healthy for the stretch.
This was one of the best pass rushes I've seen from this team. Reminds me a lot of what we did at the end of 2009. And lets not suggest that the Rams were chumps, Bradford hadn't been sacked in their last 4 games.
The biggest thing I would say is that this was a game that we haven't had in a long time, even with some miscues on special teams, this was a complete game. And when you look at the roster, assuming we can run the ball as Waters becomes more in sync and in shape with the rest of our line, we just don't have any glaring holes.
This is what we need from Murray. If we're facing constant 6 or 7 fronts, we need to be able to run the ball and well. This game gives us a lot of hope for the future, and it should open up a lot in the passing game. I can't stress enough that a lot of things worked in the running game not just because Murray played well, but this line created holes, skill position players blocked well, the 2 TE set gave us a huge advantage, the way we moved players around, and a special note that we used the draw to our advantage.
We saw the blueprint of what I thought the Cowboys could do this year in this game. I actually expect even more from the passing game (though we didn't need it today). I'm hoping Austin's injury doesn't slow him down. And though Williams got a great call for PI, we need him to stretch defenses further.
Going into San Diego, I think they're going to have a difficult time. They aren't getting after the QB very well, and they are one of the worst run defenses in the nfl. Another team who is extremely one dimensional, and while Rivers is quite a QB they no longer have any great weapons on that offense.
Going further, it's good that we have Denver at home, we seem to be playing really well at home. When we play Green Bay we also have them at home. We really just need to take care of our division, and keep playing well at home. Our schedule is pretty favorable to us.
