My gut says Henry Melton will be back next year

I think we're going to see a lot of defensive players returning, Henry Melton included.

The first year of his contract was a rental period, and I don't think we're going to pick up his option. That being said, I don't think he has done enough this year that teams are going to be banging down his door in free agency next year. As long as Marinelli stays here, this will still be the best place for him. I could see us doing another one year trial followed by an option.

Keeping him gives us one less position that we have to draft for next year. And I do think he'll be more of an impact player a year away from that ACL injury. I think there is a deal to be had for both sides here.

Depending on cost, I think we may try to keep this linebacker group the same as well. Maybe there is one too many here though, but I think with the injuries the team will see that you can never have enough linebackers.

Lee, McClain, Carter, Hitchens, Durant, Wilber.... That's probably too much, but we'll see. It'll come down to how much other teams are offering these guys, and I don't think it's going to be that much.

I read somewhere that the "bone bruise" he's experiencing can often lead to arthroscopic surgery, in which case it could be a long road for him back into the NFL, if ever.

Yep. Also I heard a rumor about Dale Hansen saying he will retire.

I think we'll have to pass on his option and then see how his knee does after he goes through treatment and rehab. He may very well be in a similar position to Anthony Spencer if he has injured his bony surfaces of his knee joint.

I feel bad for the guy but he wasn't playing like a guy worth a $9M option even prior to the injury. He had a midseason spurt but then seemed to regress down the stretch.

The "bone bruise" is rumored to be the same Almost Anthony had in Okt 2013.
It was also handled the same way by our FO. Very little info after it happend, nearly unnoticed-> bone bruise diagnosis -> IR.

Lets wait till we have actual diagnosis but i do have a bad feeling regarding meltons career.

I would love to see Melton come back but I really don't see it happening. He won't be guaranteed a starting job in Dallas so the team won't offer him a huge contract. His agent knows this next contract may be his only chance for Melton to take care of his family for life. I'm sure Melton loves it in Dallas but his agent will be looking for a multiyear contract on a team where Melton will have a starting spot and a good chance at achieving contract incentives.

If the injury is as bad as suggested he may not even be ready for playing time by the start of the next season.

I wish the kid luck because fate has not been kind to him lately.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get a deal like Okoye with a hope for a mid-season return next year to try and prove himself again and set up a bigger deal in the future. All that depends on getting his knee in shape and able to withstand the rigors of pro football.

I hope his career continues, just not in Dallas. I want to see a lot of youngsters competing for a place on that D-line next preseason.
