Heard this on The Ticket today.

The three highest spending teams in free agency this offseason are all in the NFC East, and the Dallas Cowboys AREN'T one of them. (This includes signing own free agents.)

Ponder that for a second. Jerry must be locked in a basement somewhere.

They all see a chance to win a miserable , weak, division....and get playoff fame!!!

This is hyperbole. The Cowboys generally aren't the top spenders.

This is data I found for the last few years.

2016: 21st (only guaranteed money listed at $13.5M, #1 Giants at $106.3M)
2015: 23rd ($31M, top was $181M, by Jets)
2014: Not even listed, Bucs #1 at $121M
2013: Not even listed, Miami #1 with $146.1M
2012: 6th (Brandon Carr's $50M, Bucs were #1 at $143M)

They haven't been in the top 5 in those years and only once broke the top 10 and that was the year they signed Carr to a $50M deal.

It took them this long to get a clue and get all contracts in order.
Stephen - does the job.

The difference in all those teams and us is we have huge contracts for Romo, Dez, Carr, Witt, Lee, Crawford, and Tyron. Hence we don't have the room.

Philly has 3 QB's getting paid now, but both WR's are still on rookie scale. The Gents have Eli, and Becham is still on rookie wage scale.

They are now all catching up to us and won't have that same room soon. Just like most businesses they're is a handful of employees making most of the money, and the rest are on minimum wage!

Because those other teams lack talent and had to overspend... I mean we have some holes on our defense but for the most part we already have blue-chip players across the board

Can't tell if serious....

Really, they haven't been big players in free agency since before 2010. Listening to Stephen this offseason talking about how everyone over pays in free agency, it is easy to tell why.

Like most have either stated or insinuated the Cowboys do a far better job at the draft than any other team in the NFC east so most of our money goes to the homegrown talent as opposed to outside talent. The Cowboys have never been big spenders in free agency. And it's probably for the best. Not sure where that reputation came from.

Primarily on offense. Lawrence, Crawford, Lee, ?McClain, and Jones are solid or better on defense. No holes on offense although we could get a tad better at WR and perhaps even TE.

Just to be clear here. The team generally doesn't spend much, and yet they generally don't have much to spend.

Hmmmm......

I'm more than thrilled we don't over spend in FA any more and hand out stupid contracts like we did to Carr.

I like Jason's philosophy. You build through the draft and fill gaps with role players through FA. It's not a new concept, but it is new to Dallas. Jason started it when he became head coach. Getting rid of those overpaid under performing players. Injuries held this up as well as salary cap in the way. But all that is getting sorted through. Just need a healthy season now.

Like the Giants model of old.

But when you draft poorly like the Giants have done of late you need to get higher priced, note not higher talent, free agents to keep your team competitive.

Like the Cowboys of the late 90's.

I'm happy we didn't overspend in FA which is generally the case. You can find a player or two in FA on occasion. Not easy.

generally I agree, this is the way to go....dont overspend in FA. Just dont.

I would like to have seen maybe one guy....upper middle tier guy on defense...and I think we still may have a shot at doing that. Or, backup QB.

But the more I get into this upcoming season........I am a gambler, I like to push, I think I am more like Jerry then Stephen....But, Im thinking lets just go with Romo.....save the money, and allocate it somewhere else.....These decisions arent easy:)

We have 2 maybe 3 years of Romo left. And thats if he/us are lucky. I want to sort of go all in, considering that window....
