This mock is going to have one decent sized trade due to 17 players who we liked having good enough value to not be considered a reach here. The guards, tackles, DT’s, Vaccaro, we liked as a team are all gone. The best of now include Barkley, Hankins, Allen (WR), Jesse Williams, Sly Williams, Short, Fluker, Ogletree and the guy someone might sneak into the Top 12 for, Tavon Austin, but we pass on Austin as we already have one on the roster.
R1. 18th pick We are having trouble deciding on a prospect waiting for the Steelers to pick (who take the last value on our board, being Jarvis Jones. So, we contact San Francisco and get 4 picks for the #18. 31, 61, and 2 7th rounders, 227 and 237. (I cheated and used the trade value chart to get a close number for S’s and G’s). San Francisco picks Jesse Williams who killed it at the Alabama Pro Day running a 4.85 and put up 30 reps. If we stayed 3-4, I would’ve pimped this guy all the way to Tuscaloosa.
R1. 31st pick Sylvester Williams DT North Carolina
One of the guys we like is still there as there is a run on CB’s, WR’s and Safeties. He can play either the 3T or 1T, but will be taught by one of the league’s best, and will show plenty of flashes of becoming a pretty good player. (DLine is mostly solved; the recent Durant signing fixes the front 7 this year as of now IMO.)
R2. 47th pick Dallas Thomas OL Tennessee
Might be about 10 picks too early for a good value for Thomas, but he can jump right into one of our holes on offense (every position except LT) and start from day one. He is more of a RT or LG IMO, and will allow us to cut Free post June 1st too. Warford doesn’t fit our scheme, although he would be a solid 10 year guy at RG, Thomas has versatility only a couple OLineman have in this draft. I also like Kyle Long but 47 might be too early for him.
R2. 61st pick Baccari Rambo S Georgia
Finally, a true S. Yes, he’s had some issues in the past, but we see Brent being allowed on the sideline and Ratliff still on the team. Players make mistakes, just like fans can and as long as one learns from them and realize what life is, how short it can be or how rewarding it can be by winning at the game of football or whatever, that doing the right thing matters. I think Rambo will straighten up and Henderson will keep him in line. The guy is a turnover machine, and will push Johnson to get and stay healthy as Allen will be the 3rd safety unless MJ pushes him off the roster. This guy isn’t a blazer or he would have been picked at the end of the 1st round. But his talents are taking good angles and forcing turnovers (although he can bite on fakes, I’ll take those if it means more turnovers from this D.
R3. 80th pick Brian Schwenke OL Cal
I’m super giddy with this pick because his floor is better than what we already have in Bernadeau and Cook. I think he could play C or LG better than anyone we have right now (pre draft ). He will step in and compete with Costa and Cook with Cook probably beating out Costa and Costa being the backup OG. He is smart and does the line calls.
R4. 114th pick Chris Harper/Cobi Hamilton WR KSU/Arkansas
I think we will pick a WR at some point because we need someone to split time with Harris as the #3 WR so Harris can remain mostly on returns with some help from a later pick in this draft. Harper is more of the outside WC style WR and Hamilton is a more of a route runner with weaker hands than Harper.
R5. 151st pick Dion Sims TE Michigan State
A blocking TE with some abilities to catch the ball. Might be gone already here, but Kasa is my alternative.
R6. 185th pick Kerwynn Williams RB Utah State
Will take the 3rd down obvious passing situations role well, can block a little and doesn’t have a injury history, would be a good no. 2 back with a runner more behind him who can help wear down defenses.
R7. 227th pick Chris Jones DT Bowling Green
12.5 Sacks last year. I’d take this risk too.
R7. 237th pick Michael Ford RB LSU
A guy with some RB skills (though pretty weak in the passing game blocking and catching wise) who should latch on and help KR in place of Harris.
We didn’t exactly draft a competent DE to play behind Spencer and Ware, but I feel that will come at some point, plus we still have Albright and Wilbur, plus any role players who are still available to play.
