My Meaningless Thoughts On the Game
Yakuza Rich Blog

- I think we've already seen a huge improvement in the special teams. A blocked kick, solid coverage on returns and Buehler was really booming them. Even the ones Buehler didn't get deep into the endzone were into a fierce wind. Even though the defense looked uninspired today, you could see this make a difference because essentially the Bucs needed one more down to get into field goal range and we wound up blocking one of their field goals and seeing Nugent miss the other field.

- Horribly disappointed in the coaching except for the job Joe DeCamillis did. Yep, Romo had a really great day and we scored 34 points. But Garrett still doesn't get how to keep the defense off balance when it comes to running the ball and too often, particularly in the first half, we looked extremely confused, disorganized and undisciplined.

- The same could be said for the defense where the only guys that played well seemed to be Sensabaugh and Ratliff (who had tough duty today against Faine and Joseph). To the offense's credit, they seemed to make adjustments in the second half, in particular getting the plays off more quickly instead of waiting until there was :01 on the play clock every time. The defense just seems to get confused and not set. In the 4th quarter they started knocking Leftwich around pretty good, but it was too late. I don't think the Cowboys can get away with this against good teams and I think we'll see another year where the pass rush gets off to a slow start and comes on at the end and then disappears in crucial games.

- I really loved what I saw out of Sensabaugh today. Gets downhill well, rangy, and closes like a mutha. If he's healthy, we'll love him in Dallas.

- The offensive passing game has now become much more 'slant oriented.' I like this in part because I like the slant and now when we run that dumb 'fake slant into a draw play' at least it makes sense. Why we didn't want to run slants with Owens last year still puzzles me, but we are a slant running offense now. We are also noticeably better at not dropping passes with Roy, Crayton, Martellus and Witten (also Austin who made a great play today).

- Uh, for those who may care (or at least the Cowboys critics), Fasano had 2 lost fumbles today against the Falcons.

- It appears Choice will be our short yardage back. Which I like.

- Would it kill us to run a screen with Felix? Y'know, like how the Eagles use Westbrook and how the Jaguars use Jones-Drew.

- My grade on the refs is probably in the 'D' range. They missed 1 running into the punter. Missed a very obvious face mask. Missed at least 3 noticeable holds in the first half, 2 of which where Ratliff was the victim and the illegal contact call against Sensabaugh that negated an INT was garbage. I'm amazed how the league tries to ignore the quality of refereeing year after year.

- A win is a win in the NFL, especially when it's on the road. I don't think the Bucs will be that good this year and there's some cause for concern, but we saw a team that was better with field position given the improvement in special teams and a QB that didn't turn the ball over once. In fact, I thought Romo limited his poor decisions quite well today. That and the offense does seem to be geared to playing to the WR's strengths. Still, this is a team that needs to get off to better and more disciplined starts and stop focusing their efforts towards making halftime adjustments. We get the G-Men next week at Cowboys Stadium, so the defense, particularly the run defense will have to step up and we'll need more discipline all around. But obviously I think we have a chance. If so, then we could possibly start the season 5-0 going into the bye (Carolina, @ Denver, @ KC). But just like the players, we all need to take it one game at a time.

I hope we use screens to Felix next week against the Giants to keep them off balance.

Based on one game?

Not trying to nitpick, just curious as to why you think this already?

Our offense has the same problems as last season, we get to the line late and no one knows what the hell they are doing or where to line up.

True. In '07 we were usually getting to the line quickly and getting the play off. I really don't like it when an offense waits until :01 to snap the ball, only unless it's pretty much a necessity. Offenses need to change it up, snap the ball with :10 seconds left, then :04 left, then :06 left, etc. Then the defense can't get a jump on the snap. They were getting there late for most of the first half, but sped things up in the second half and it's no coincidence the offense played well in the second half.

Trend of the coaching staff. Under Zimmer we would usually get to sacking the QB at a decent clip early on and then fizzle hard at the end. Under Wade so far we struggle a bit early on in the season to sack the QB and then come on strong. Doesn't look like much changed after this game. Although I do think we really clocked Leftwich in the second half. A few of the hits, particularly Bowen's were brutal.

Because everything is apparent after one game. We have no pass rush and no defense, but we are very disciplined, our wide receivers are great, and our special teams might be the best in the league.

personally I thought the refs were good. What did they call? 7 penalties? I'd prefer that to "over-officious jerks" like Mike Carey and Ed Hochuli.

It's hard to ignore some trends of a coaching staff. We really didn't have great pressure early on in '07 and then in '08. But as those seasons progressed the sacks started to really tally up. And I really doubt we'll get many sacks against the G-Men next week since Eli doesn't get sacked much.

Eli was sacked 8 times in his last visit to Dallas.

Did we have a very poor passrush today? Definitely.
Do I think we are still capable of getting to the QB? Definitely.

I know DeMarcus played a little jellylegged today after his collision, but he really hasn't looked right the whole camp and in preseason. I think he will get it going however.

Great players always break out and I think he will sooner rather than later.

From where we sat today I completely agree 100%.

Nice assessment, but I disagree about the officiating. Too me it seemed like the referee team was more leniant, which helps our sloppy offensive line. So, even though they missed some stuff, I believe it was consistent and actually benefits us more then the opposition.

There's a difference between being lenient and doing a poor job. Somebody reminded me of two obvious blocks in the backs that they missed. I'm sure they missed some stuff that should've been called on Dallas, but you can't miss obvious stuff like blocks in the back since they are huge penalties and the facemask is a player safety issue.

Not calling penalties doesn't make them good refs.

Always enjoy your thoughts, Rich, which are consistently meaningful. I did not have any issue with Garrett and the play calling. Nor did I think the offense was disoriented. I think they could have hung up close to 50 if Romo had been on target in H1 as he was in H2.

One observation: The experts have assumed TB will be bad this year. Maybe so. But that remains to be seen. For the most part, the players they shed were used up. Winning fairly easily in TB might be a decent accomplishment.

The pass rush was not poor - Leftwich got pummelled this game. Unfortunately, the pass rush didn't rattle him. He is just one tough quarterback.

One play that really stood out to me.

On the Ronde Barber sack, old "careless" Romo would have tried to make a play. When he usually faces pressure, he usually does his little juke but only keeps one hand on the ball and it's far away from his body. This is where most of his fumbles occur.

However, I noticed him tightly secure the ball with two hands and just fall down when Barber blitzed. We've been hearing how much they've emphasized to Romo to cut down on his turnovers, and it's awesome to actually see it in action.

And was that early on in the season?

No, it wasn't.

YAKUZA

No, the first game we got him 3 times in 2008.

In 2007, we got him once in the first game, 5 times in the second, and 3 times in the playoff game.

In two seasons that comes out to 20 sacks in 5 games.
