-I thought this game would tell a lot about the team and I was right. We have probably an 11-5 team, but with a shaky, 8-8 QB.
-I'll chart the game (although I'll miss first 5 minutes thanks to crappy Atlanta cable), but I think the problem is more Bledsoe than the offensive line. Two things really killed us is that when Bledsoe had time, he couldn't hit the passes. And the other is that he doesn't like operating out of the shotgun, which would've curbed their blitzing effectiveness. When I chart QB prospects for the draft, I want to know how well they operate out of the shotgun as well as under center. I really believe in today's blitz happy league, you pretty much need to be able to do both or you get what we had today.
-I thought I saw a hold on Witten on the last INT. Still, Bledsoe can't throw the ball unless Witten is open in that situation.
-Zimmer decided to quit blitzing in the second half.....typical.
-What was with Suisham's short kickoffs today?
-We took wayyyyy too long to finally throw some screen passes against their blitz.
-Overall, I'm a bit conflicted about the game. I like a lot of the talent we have, I think the team is much mentally tougher and hanging in there in this game was somewhat impressive. Remember last year when the Skins took on the Giants after Wellington Mara died and got killed by the G-Men? This game had the feel that it could go that way, but it didn't....and in fact if we had solid QB play we probably win this game. And even despite that, they were on the Philly 6 and down by 7, with 10 points basically given to the Eagles on a fumble by the punter and a fumble by the QB.
Despite those good feelings, I get the feeling that both Bledsoe and Brunnell are very similar type QB's. When things are going pretty well early on, they can be very good. But when they start getting hit early on, they seem to stink the rest of the entire game. And if this team makes the playoffs, you have to think that a good blitzing defense or some adverse weather conditions will not be good for us.
For now I think there's a lot of questions to still be answered about what this team can do to work around Bledsoe's inconsistency. But it probably won't be close to being answered again until we face the Skins in DC.
