Let me start with some *good* stuff -- I thought the defense played very well. The schemes we used were on the money; we stopped the run when we had to and we forced several punts AND had a huge red-zone stand in the first quarter. It's my opinion that the coaching on defense was very good - that being said, we had PLAYERS get beat twice deep. Watkins must accept some responsibility for getting beat deep twice, however Roy also must accept some blame for the Brown TD: if Roy had gone for the hit instead of the ball, I think it would have been better - but I could be wrong.
Offensively I thought we played fair-to-good. JJ got 100 yards rushing -- pretty good against a strong defensive front. After that, things didn't look so good. We had too many dropped passes! JJ and TO both dropped passes - and if I remember right, either Fasano or Witten dropped one as well. Fasano got beat by Cole for a critical sack -- question: Why was a rookie TE blocking a starting DE one-on-one? Why was Bledsoe under center AFTER the first time the blitz came strong right up the middle? It's my opinion that while the running game was good, the scheme and gameplan against this defense was not as good as it should have been. The M.O. for the Philly D is blitz; we've seen it before against Bledsoe; why not plan to exploit it? You can't exploit it if Bledsoe has less than 1 second to throw the ball. Put him in MORE shotgun formations, run from the shotgun, run some screens, run some draws, roll Bledsoe out -- then lets see if they still blitz. I believe we were out-coached on the offensive side of the ball.
It's clear that TG and TO were both frustrated today -- I think they were both open a lot. Bledsoe and TO are not yet on the same page - the missed time in training camp shows up big-time.
The offensive line played well - mostly - but our 5 guys had problems blocking their 7. Of the starters, it looked like Rivera had the worst day (to me). I'm not sure there was any starter who did not get beat at one point in the game.
Bledose is who he is -- and when he's pressured consistently, he will make mistakes. The coaching staff knows this, but still didn't seem to adjust for it. Our entire offensive scheme should be designed to play to our starting players strengths -- and it sure didn't look like that was the case yesterday.
We played good enough to win - and bad enough to lose. I thought it was an excellent effort on the road in a hostile environment -- and nobody got hit with batteries (or anything else really). No injuries. Let's hope this makes our team tougher, more disciplined, and more driven.
