When you spend a ton of money on a guitar, it should come setup by a professional. Overall it's not that bad except for the action is way to high. The intonation seems to be decent though.

I will just get the thing setup again again. I know a good guy that does it, but he is always booked out three freaking weeks. :(

Very nice! You should learn how to set it up yourself, it's not that difficult.

I can do some of it, but not all of it. I tried with my American Deluxe Strat last year when I got it, but I just couldn't get it perfect and I was worried about damaging it. They are way to expensive to learn on. I finally just gave up and had it done. I will do the same with this one.

Yeah, I don't blame you. It's well worth it, especially with a nice new guitar. I learned on cheaper ones. If I ever got something pricey I'd probably have someone else do it too.

Very nice my fellow Iron man!

I treated myself to a 1996 Gibson les Paul cream color back in 2010. I'm a disciple of Randy Rhoads :)
Back in 1983 I received a Randy Rhoads shark fin student model.

On the Les....Set the action as low as you can.
Play through an amp. Even when you practice... Otherwise low action will buzz and annoy you.

Higher action on a Les will make it more difficult to play.
The action on the shark fin is barely off the frets. I love it. Can't do that on Les but you can get it close.

The action on my Ibanez Prestiage and my Fender Strat is very low. The Fender buzzes slightly with no amp on it. The Ibanez does not.

I had a Gibson Les Paul Studio a couple of years ago, but I sold it because it had a shotty paint job on the neck. (paint on the rosewood) This one appears to be flawless, so I'm very happy about that. I'm sure I can get the action very low on this one too. My last Les Paul had super low action too.

This is my current American Deluxe Strat. (2015 or maybe it was 2014) I got it last year around Christmas, so it's probably a 2015.

My 2010 Ibanez Prestiage 2550E with a cheap Silvertone acoustic that my wife put in the attic without telling me or releasing the pressure of the strings that ended up snapping the headstock. (the accoustic, not my Ibanez, that would never go in the attic :) ) The Ibanez is my absolute favorite. :)

Excuse my ignorance, but what does it mean to "set up" the guitar?

String change

Adjust truss rod - straightens out the neck if bent.
1401699951TrussRod_Diagram.jpg

File nut (if necessary) - Where the strings lay from the headstock
nutsmainpicture.jpg

Adjust action - the height of strings from the fretboard

Adjust intonation - makes the guitar "in tune" up and down the neck. the harmonic and the fretted note on the 12th fret should be the same. If not, it throws everything off. Example, Chords will sound good lower on the neck, but it'll be out of tune when you play higher up.

I think that's basically it. :D

Nice! Just work through the Wasted Years intro and maybe IM the One and you may build up to the high action

I traded a 77 Custom Goldtop for an Ibanez Universe 7 string in 1990. Got serial number 11, but still the dumbest decision I made. Sorry...Ibanez and Les Paul triggers memories

hah yeah. That had to be painful. I love my Ibanez it's my favorite guitar, but if I had a choice of trading my Les Paul/Fender for one I wouldn't. Their monetary value is much higher than the Ibanez, so I would just buy another Ibanez first hah. Besides, I got my Ibanez for half price ($650) as they were clearing out their stock for the next years models.

It's adjusting the neck (the truss rod) that scares the crap outta me when doing a setup. This is why I always just pay to get my good guitars setup.
