So I generally get into draft study very late so I don't end up with a million mocks.
Obviously the cutting of Dez and the recent news about Irving (even though she recanted, I am sure there will be an investigation and significant concern about him long term) are going to affect what we do. Going in, my concern is G, WR, LB and DL, with LB and G the most pressing needs.
I think LB is the biggest need, because I really only see us having one surefire LB in Lee and his health is always going to be an issue. I am probably more positive in regard to Smith than most but he is not a sure thing with his injury. After that, I don't see a starting level LB on our team, so I think we have to target that spot.
Guard is the second biggest need but if we can't get one high, we have a ton of options available, from moving Collins there and starting Fleming at RT to letting Martin and Looney compete for the job along with Chaz Green. Some people still think Green can make some noise, but I can't help but think this camp is his last chance.
DL and pass rusher are something to address but we have added several bodies in Ealy, Jones, and have Tapper coming back for probably his last hurrah.
Using Fanspeak's draft tool, here is what I came up with:
19: R1P19
LB RASHAAN EVANS
ALABAMA
50: R2P18
WR D.J. MOORE
MARYLAND
81: R3P17
DL TIM SETTLE
VIRGINIA TECH
116: R4P16
LB JOSEY JEWELL
IOWA
137: R4P37
S TERRELL EDMUNDS
VIRGINIA TECH
171: R5P34
OT COLE MADISON
WASHINGTON STATE
192: R6P18
S TARVARIUS MOORE
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
193: R6P19
LB JACK CICHY
WISCONSIN
208: R6P34
RB ITO SMITH
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
236: R7P18
EDGE MARCELL FRAZIER
MISSOURI
Basically, it came down to Evans, Vander Esch and an OL. I picked Evans who should be a day one starter. I later added two more LBs that I think could easily stick on the roster. Jewell is a MLB that reminds me of Hitchens, right down to the school he comes from. He has some versatility. Cichy is an injury risk but many think if he can stay healthy he is starter level. In the 6th round hard to pass him by.
In the second I was surprised to see DJ Moore there, but even if he wasn't there were several wideouts that I think were good value. Very comfortable with him in the second.
My third rounder was somewhat of a desperation pick. I really think I would have been trying to trade up with our 3rd and using one of our other picks to get up higher or back into the second. Possibility of a first round trade down and grabbing more ammo to accomplish the trade up scenario in the third. This is the one pick I am the least happy with.
Picked up a couple day 3 safeties that can come in and at least be depth. With Jones going back to corner, we need at least one safety. Both are athletic and have good speed.
Have seen Madison talked about a lot, college T that many see moving inside. To me, he is a good candidate to fight with Martin and Looney for the LG position. Hindsight I might have taken an OL in the 3rd and maybe considered DT here with a guy like Kendrick Norton or Poona Ford.
Finally, grabbed our jitterbug type back that we know Linehan likes and an edge rusher that could be a pass rush specialist. Definitely could give a guy like Tapper a run for his money given the injury concerns.
UDFA I would be looking at a developmental type QB and a couple corners to compete with the bottom end corners like Duke Thomas and Marquez White.
So let's hear it: Hate it? Like It? Love it? I think for me it would fit somewhere between like and love.
And oh, I didn't pick a TE because I don't see anyone cracking the top 4 of Witten, Swaim, Gathers or Jarwin. Maybe another UDFA.
