Phil's one and only attempt at a Mock.....
I've tried to provide a couple of options for each round. It's likely that none of these guys will be a Cowboy, as they may be gone by our picks or just not valued enough by Mr Jones.
1) Sheldon Richardson DT - With the departure of Spears, I think the Cowboys will look at the value of the DT class and see that this is a guy who can play the 1 or 3 technique spot and do well.
1A) Jonathan Cooper OG - This is the guy I really want. He's got the athleticism that is important to a Zone blocking scheme and he would be a fixture for a decade or more.
2) D.J. Fluker G - I know this guy was a Tackle in Alabama, but he could slide over to be a very good guard. This would be the contingency plan if Cooper or Warmack were not available.
2A) Sylvester Williams DT - There's a good chance he could also be gone, in which case Kawann Short could be the choice. I believe that the Cowboys need to address the trenches in the first two rounds.
3) Barrett Jones C- The quest for prime beef continues to deal with the Cowboys biggest weakness. Other options could include S or RB, but I believe that the best value for this position is around here or in the previous round.
3A) Khaled Holmes C - This guy's stock seems to have fallen and I don't know why. His Junior season was his best one , but he was part of a disappointing USC team last year. I did not see him as the problem. Like Cooper, he can also play Guard.
4) Stepfan Taylor RB - Figuring out the RB's was the most challenging part of doing this. There are a dozen or more Backs in this draft who could be good players for the Cowboys. Taylor was one of the guys I saw play this year and I liked his consistent effort and pass catching ability.
4A) Bennie Logan DT - Very good value at this point and he may not be available, but if my previous targets don't pan out, he'd fit nicely in the rotation at DT.
5) Gavin Escobar TE - With Phillips gone, this player represents a legit receiving threat. If the Cowboys want more of a blocker they might prefer Kasa or Williams. Escobar is a potential solid weapon as a receiver and I think he's good value here.
5A) J.J. Wilcox, S - This player has been all over draft boards I've seen, with him going anywhere from round 2 to 6. He impressed coaches at the Senior Bowl and would appear to be a decent pick anywhere from this round forward.
6) Duke Williams S - I was torn between this guy and Shamarko Thomas, who's been getting some positive press leading up to the draft. Williams is bigger and has solid technique.
6A) Nick Kasa TE - I believe that TE will be addressed in this draft. Kasa is one of several pretty good athletes available.
Feel free to look hard at this, or dismiss it out of hand. I believe that the Cowboys want more speed on this team and some of these players would represent a move in that direction. I believe that the skill level in the trenches is the area of greatest need. No CB's or LB's? It's a legit criticism, but I feel that there's better value in these positions.
