I usually either do mocks before the college season is over or after the combine because players move around the rankings too much in that downtime, but here goes anyway. It's my turn to be ripped to shreds.
Trade WR Patrick Crayton to Carolina for FS Charles Godfrey
In a trade involving arguably the most undervalued and mock traded players for both teams, the Panthers get a WR opposite Smith that runs great routes with good hands while the Cowboys get a young player to compete with Michael Hamlin for the FS position. Might have to send a pick their way but the CB to FS experiment ended when Sherrod Martin took the starting position and they really need a WR. Besides, our players are always more valuable than the player or pick we are trading for so I didn't include a pick in the trade.
1st: Maurkice Pouncey C/G, Florida
With Pouncey, we get a smart, strong and athletic player. He can make the line calls and is very good snapping the ball from the shotgun position, two areas Gurode struggled. Also provides insurance with Kosier playing out the final year of his contract.
2nd: Traded down and added a 5th.
3rd: Jordan Shipley WR, Texas
Shipley will replace the departed Crayton. Similar to Crayton, runs good routes, finds the holes in zones, has reliable hands. Will man the slot, return punts and kicks and hold on field goals.
3rd: Jared Veldheer OT, Hillsdale
The Cowboys are excited that Veldheer fell this far despite a good showing at Texas vs Nation.
4th: Akwasi Owusu-Ansah DB, Indiana (PA)
Akwasi has size, strength and speed. Will compete at both CB and FS positions as well as in the return game. Plays through injury.
ACQUIRED IN 2ND ROUND TRADE DOWN
5th: Micah Johnson ILB, Kentucky
His play would make him a higher pick, his knees keeps him down in the 5th.
5th TRADED TO DENVER FOR HOLLAND
6th: Derek Hardman OT/OG, Eastern Kentucky
Along with Veldheer, Hardman had an excellent showing in the Texas vs Nation game; this after playing both LT and RT in college but moving to G for the game. Coaches mentioned improvement every day in practice.
With every starting offensive linemen in their 30s, Jerry's penchant for overloading a position in the draft and our struggles against Minnesota, it's no suprise that the Cowboys went on a run at offensive line this year.
7th: Clifton Geathers DE, South Carolina
Great size, strength and initial step but only 13 career starts really hurts his stock. Brother and Father both play(ed) in the NFL. Questionable character.
