Alright I am not going to get into any blame game or finger pointing. The boyz simply got beat by the better team yesterday and I can live with that. Here are the stats from 91 11-5 2nd in the east won the WC game vs the Bears then lost to the Lions 38-7. I have been torn the past month of where this team was at, the year end demons had been eradicated and they won a playoff game but my gut just would not let me totally believe this team was there. With that I BELIEVED in this team and felt they were the best team left in the playoffs, and were headed to the SB. This is a very young team that had to go on the road against a very sound team. Losing this way can be a very good motivating factor for next year. Can you imagine home field next year...this team was close this year and played great the entire year. Hold your head up high boyz fans this team gives us plenty of reasons to smile and look forward to next year. This is a team that will only get better mark it down.

Man, I wish people would tone down all the "This is similar to the 1991 team" talk.

This was the 2009 team.

The main problem with that theory is that the Vikings proved that our worst unit is the most important one and that is the Offensive Line.

I don't 100% agree with the 91/92 reference, but I do think that this team has better days ahead. I posted the list below in another thread, but it applies here as well. The fact is that the offensive line is not as bad off as some think with Free and Brewster waiting in the wings. Columbo was not 100% and should not have been starting over Free in my opinion. We got away with it against Philly, but it came back and bit us in this game.

One major issue I have with Wade is his resistance to promoting players during the season. If Roy Williams does not go down, then there is no way that Austin would have forced himself into the starting line-up. Felix should have been out there instead of Barber from December forward. Free should not have lost his starting spot to a banged up Columbo. Having said all that, I think that those players are all in the starting line-up next season because they will force the issue in training camp. Now, some building blocks that people are losing in all of the gloom:

  • There was a good buzz about Robert Brewster prior to his peck injury. He is a monster and could be a good tackle for us.
  • As gaudy as his numbers were, we did not have Miles in that starting spot for the entire year. He is the real deal.
  • The last few games of the season showed us what a healthy Felix Jones can do. His health issues are flukes and his between the tackles work is underrated. He will start next season and be pro-bowl caliber. Choice will get more carries as well. Barber is breaking down and is simply not the back he was a few years ago.
  • Spencer only came on and played like an All Pro from November forward this season. We will get a full year of that next season and it will cause issues for other teams.
  • Jenkins broke out around game three this year and could be even better next season.
  • Doug Free played lights out when he was put in a starting role and has the footwork to be a left tackle in this league.
  • Ogletree is going to be a player in this league. He will get more snaps next year and it will make this football team better.
  • We will have a first round pick this year and who says we can't pick some good players in the upcoming draft?

Alright I am not comparing the teams as far as personnel I am comparing the similarities of where the 91 team was and where the 09 team is at. Very similar IMO. Young teams, both just got first playoff wins, both got trounced in the div round, and both proved during their respective seasons they had became a team to recon with for the upcoming years. This team has arrived just as the 91 team did.
