I think there will be some surprise cuts this season.

Brandon Williams - like most have said, you haven’t heard his name at all and that's not good.
Holland - hurt, fat, out of shape. cowboys will roll the dice with Arkin or bring in waters.
McCray - too many safties he is competing with.
Holley - couple of the young kids are showing him up, like Radway and his ceiling is not high.
Brookings (oh my)…… with lee tearing it up in camp, cowboys, may roll the dice with young LBs and wait for carter to start playing….we are not going to compete this year. so what does brookings bring to the table, in the last year of his contract. Ryan will employ butler in 3rd downs a lot. brookings makes too much for a back up.

Kitna - it all depends on How McGee does in preseason. without Romo we are doomed anyway. again, we are not competing this year. Kitna will be gone next year. so why keep him over a younger player that we could keep and develop.

Choice: we will try to trade him. perhaps get a conditional 7th rounder or 6th rounder at most. Miller has been tearing it up in camp. can catch and has been excellent in picking up blitzes against Ryan's complicated defense. his ceiling is much much higher than Choice. but I doubt, seriously doubt if anyone is going to pay anything for him. what we know. they know. we know he is average and lacks in certain areas. so other teams know the same.

igor, will be traded to the texans for a 4th or 5th round pick. Wade loves him and needs him. with Coleman, Spears, hatcher, lessimore, rat, brent and couple of other young prospects we are set at DL. He won’t be around next year anyway. we are not competing this year. so why keep him?

AOA, I am not sure if we are ready to give up on AOA. he is struggling. but that’s to be expected. they may, may move him to CB. he is got athletic talent. he is a hard worker. tackles pretty good. his game is not at saftey, where he has to make too many decisions (like ball). he maybe the big CB we are looking for.

I see his name in the ESPN chats all the time.
Holland - hurt, fat, out of shape. cowboys will roll the dice with Arkin or bring in waters.
That won't be a suprise
McCray - too many safties he is competing with.
ST might make him a keeper
Holley - couple of the young kids are showing him up, like Radway and his ceiling is not high.

Older injured vet... surprise, but not really..

I think that would be a surprise, so it's not likely to happen. He's in his last year.

The only real surprise from that list would be Kitna. Choice is a tough call becasue he has proven to do an admirable job as a starter when called upon and is cheap. But Miller is younger and cheaper and MAY be a better fit as a 3rd RB.

While they might cut Brookings (I doubt it), it will only be because he sucks. I can guarantee you that there is not one single person in the Cowboys organization, least of all Jerry Jones, who makes the personnel decisions, that thinks they can't compete this year. That will NOT be a factor in this decision.

Why are we 'not competing' this year?

I didn't mean it to come across that we are giving up on the year,.

but this team as it stands right now is not ready to compete for superbowl. making it to the playoffs would be a great accomplishment.

so do you want to keep around a bunch of veterans that are back ups and probably won't be here next year. as opposed to keeping some young talented players that need development?

that came across wrong.

IMO, we are not superbowl ready. we might, might make it to the playoffs and that would be a huge accomplishment.

so why keep brookings, who is going to cost 3 million. and be a back up to lee and james? and he is gone next year.

Not for nothing, but it is Keith Brooking . . .I see people on this board constantly using Brookings . . .just wanted to throw it out there is all . . .

lol, I almost had a heart attack thinking these guys had been cut already.

oh, we will compete (play hard). but it will be tough, with eagles, tampa, atlanta, NO, Chicago, GB, plus somebody in NFC west as well as Giants in our own division, it will be tough to make the playoffs.

although this team will be better than last year, it still has many holes to fill and lacks talent in certain areas and lacks depth in others.

garrett will have them fighting and clawing every week. but I don't think this team is ready for a deep playoff run. I am not throwing the white flag. I am just not dillusional with images of grandeur and superbowl victory.

our defense as it stands right now is the 2nd oldest in the league. ryan may do some great things, but we won't be going from one of the worst to top 5 in one year. it just doesn't happen that way.

I like that we addressed the OL, but we still have to remember that the RG is unsettled. the LG may have a rookie starting and we have a rookie RT.

despite being better at saftey with Elam, he wasn't exactly the best of the best our there. our secondary is very very questionable, with Newmann being injured, the safties are average at best and who knows which jenkins will show up.

the question on some of these players is what do they bring to the table? are they progress stoppers? is the back up to them, just as good as them?

I agree, depending on some of the cuts, we may keep certain players for ST play.

McCray and Holley are two of the best special teamers from last year.
Radway's not bumping Holley unless he's a special teams DEMON.

I think the Giants are worse, and, despite their free agent signings, I think the Eagle still have their own weaknesses. I think if the Cowboys handle their own business, they can contend for the division.

I think there is still plenty of talent on this roster. Areas of concern? Yeah, but who doesn't?

The talent is here, and has been here. If this coaching staff can maximize that talent, who knows how far this team can go?

Other than Newman, I don;t see too many 'old-timers' on our defense. And they don't need to be top 5, just better than average and better than the embarrassment of last year..

I like that we addressed the OL, but we still have to remember that the RG is unsettled. the LG may have a rookie starting and we have a rookie RT.

Legit concern, I hope they sign Brian Waters to help stabilize the line. Holland cannot be counted on and should be counted out.

I think Elam is the best fit for this defense and the best available option for this team. He will be a huge upgrade over Alan Ball who was in way over his head at safety. It also looks like they've found a keeper in Barry Church.

Who is this Brookings guy I keep hearing about?

Where in this thread are the surprise cuts going to be listed?

The thread started with a rank-and-file list of the cuts that have been talked about and postulated for weeks now, and I expected the thread (based on the thread title) to move on to some surprises. I'm really eager to read them! Did I just miss them or did they get deleted somehow?

despite all of that, we still split with them (Giants) last season and it seems they have had our number in at least one game every year. they still have a good defense. they still have a good OL. Eli, though not elite is in the same class as Romo. and their WR group is pretty good.

eagles to me are not superbowl favorites, but they have improved. you can't say that they added two pass rusher and two corners and a good back up RB and they haven't improved. they were a playoff team last year.

I think there is still plenty of talent on this roster. Areas of concern? Yeah, but who doesn't?

I agree. everyone has issues.

I think the talent is there in certain areas. and it lacks in others across the board. i.e. our secondary is weak across the board.

brookings who may get cut. coleman. newmann. elam, james are all over 30.

I agree that Elam is a better fit than ball. but it is still elam. he is average to maybe above average. that's not saying much.
