Hard to stay consistent with the running game when your playing from behind bc your defense stinks.
Lets take a look at the eight Cowboys losses...
• Versus KC the Cowboys were up 10-7 at half and 13-7 at 6:45 of the third. They had 16 rush attempts for 37 yards and lost 17-16.
• At SD Dallas was up 21-13 at half and 21-20 going in to the fourth quarter. The team gained 92 yards on 16 carries. That's almost six yards a clip. Lost 30-21.
• Versus Denver the team was down 28-20 at half, 35-20 at 8:05 in the third and 38-33 going into the fourth. Good guys were up 41-38 at 13:38 and 48-41 with 7:19 left. The Cowboys ran the ball 14 times for 52 yards and a 3.7 average. Denver, 31 for 103 at 3.3.
• Dallas was ahead 10-7 at half @ Detroit and was up 27-17 with 6:45 to go. The team lost 31-30. They ran the ball 26 times for 62 yards.
• Down double digits by half @ both NO and Chicago.
• Cowboys were up on Green Bay by 23 points at half and 29-17 to start the fourth quarter. They ran the ball 18 times for 134 yards and lost 37-36.
• For all the marbles vs Philly, Dallas was looking up at 17-10 at halftime and 17-16 to start the fourth. Philly stretched its lead to 24-16 with 6:09 in the fourth and Dallas failed a two point conversion to tie with 3:50 to go. 18 rushing attempts for 56 yards. Final score was 24-22.
So the idea that the Cowboys couldn't run the ball because they were always playing catch up seems a little off to me. The team actually lost three fourth quarter leads and only got down double digits three times in its losses. The Cowboys were never down by more than a TD against KC, Green Bay or Philly and were up on San Diego in the fourth quarter until they lost by nine. Dallas lost six of its eight games by an average of less than a FG each, and that's counting the SD game.
