My Thoughts Coming Into The Draft

The management of this team has created a problem. Several really, but one very important problem in my eyes.

While I was ready for TO to depart because I think Romo cannot lead the offense with a more dominate personality in a WR like TO. We still sacrificed production by cutting him. We have not shown a clear cut replacement of that production.

Now I know some think the running game will do this. But what concerns me is simple. If we cannot force teams to respect the WR's on this team, what does that do to Witten and the running game?

I like RW11. But I think he has more questions than answers at this point. Can he consistently command the double? If not, we may have a real issue.

Miles Austin is another concern. I do not think one game against Green Bay answers anything. I counter with December when he played in three games and had one catch for 23-yards.

The "Let's find out what we have," theory is a scary propostition for me. Because there is a potential to find out we don't have zip.

Therefore, if I was running the draft, I would be very aware of where the WR's are and if they are falling. The Giants need a replacement for Plax if they don't pull the trigger on Edwards. That affects our draft strategy. Do they take a guy we like? And is there anyone that we target which would cause us to move in front of them? And at what cost?

I do not think there is a guy out there that would be worth that type of move. But early second, if there is no run on WR and the Giants don't take the last guy we like is has potential to pay off.

Moving up to snag a guy that may have fallen is a move I would strongly consider. I understand about safety and other issues. But we just do not have enough answers to suggest we have a WR corp that will be effective. There is a serious domino effect if we are one dimensional.

And any comments about Witten being the true #2 indicates the poster hasn't thought this out.

There will be some that suggest a rookie doesn't normally help in his first year. I'd say last year's results contradict that.

Nicks, Hayward-Bey or Robiski all have potential.

I would be careful of Hayward-Bey because of his lack of production. But the guy is big and he simply can fly. He would have to fall into the 40's for me to seriously want to move.

Nicks has skills and that is undeniable. But you don't get the blinding speed. And his track record, and possible off-field issues have to come into play. Again, in the 40's and I have to think seriously about him.

Robiski will not be a speedster. But the kid brings desire, an intellect, toughness and precise route running. He is a team player that puts winning as a team mate above personal goals.

Everything about him says a solid #2 that can deliver the tough catch and run with the ball. But he will not be a deep threat. But he may be the safest pick available at this position.

But I would seriously want to wait to close to our pick and them make a move up if need be. But try and secure him where we draft in the second.

He is the most pro-style ready and can step in and be productive. He just isnt a sexy pick.

I would follow up in the fifth and use a pick to get Mike Wallace. I do not believe there are many that think Stanbach will be anything but a bust. And Hurd can catch, but one injury and we have no depth.

Safety, NT and OL can be had by the myriad of picks we possess in the middle rounds. Our team has opening, but I don't believe where we draft we will come away with a starter for any of those positions. We may have a contributor.

Yet the question for me is simple. Is there a defensive player that will upgrade the team in a way to offset the loss of production in the offense? And will that player be available for us at 51?

This year its about offense for me.

Well, we've gone LB 3 out of the last 4 years with our first pick.

Its either gonna be WR or SS. Those two positions are the deepest in the draft and I'm sure we will have some talented players fall to us.
