My Thoughts on Sunday

My thoughts won't be popular but here they are.

1. Those who don't like Garrett have just been waiting for this day. All the screaming and moaning and groaning is magnified because there was a lot of pent up anger anyway.

a. Whether you agree or disagree with not taking a timeout (and I disagree with Garrett about this), it wasn't COMPLETELY unreasonable. Dallas had 8 plays for negative yardage, and all it would have taken was a false start to take them out of field goal range.

b. To lay the timeout completely on Garrett when video shows BOTH the special teams coach and Boniol running up to Garrett and asking him to take a time out, is just dishonest.

2. Jerry Jones can be upset with Garrett, he's the owner, but to go on and on about what a GREAT job the Cardinals coaching staff did and what EXCELLENT coaches they have is just ridiculous. Do you like their 5-7 record too Jerry? They must not be excellent every week.

3. Finally, this does not end our season by any stretch. Beat the Giants Sunday and take a 2 game lead in the NFC East and we will be just fine.

Again, to be clear (but I know before I ever say it the vast majority won't hear me say it)... I don't personally agree with Garrett's end of the game decisions on Sunday, but the way it is being portrayed is way over the top.

This is why, yet again, there were so many shotgun plays.

The line has to play better.

And the coordinator has to call some plays that put pressure on a blitzing defense.

Adjustments.. I know those are foreign around here.

I assume you're talking about hot reads and quick developing pass routes, such as slants.

How do we know he's not calling those?

Once in my earlier days of coaching I let an assstant coach talk me into something that, .. was not a bad idea, but it was not my idea.

It didn't work out, and I told myself then that I would succeed or fail with my own decisions from now on. I have learned to trust my instincts and my decisions.

I have had asst. coaches come over and tell me, "we better do this", or "we better do that". Sometimes I do it sometimes I don't, based on my own opinion at the time.

It was ultimately Garrett's decision.

They threw a slant to Dez for the TD. They tried a hot read to LR, but he kept running down the sidelines. They threw the wheel to Felix, but he never picked up the ball. Those are a few examples. If your interior OL isn't good in space, it's hard to run screens. When you can't trust your WR's to get off press coverage or run a hot route instead of a deep one, it's hard to run quick stuff.

Last year, in Minnesota, we ran a ton of swing and screen passes to counter the Vikings' blitz. People complained that we didn't go downfield enough.

Go back and watch the game again. You'll see plenty of plays where Romo looked to get rid of the ball early, but didn't. Probably because his guy wasn't getting open.

This was my point.

I completely agree with you.

I don't doubt for a moment that Garrett is calling plays specifically to beat blitzes. People erroneously assume that, because the Cowboys aren't consistently beating the blitz, Garrett must not be calling the right plays. This line of reasoning is simply faulty.

I can think of other things that are foreign around here.

Because all the football experts are on this board. They know everything! I can't believe they are not into coaching (and not the armchair variety)

:D

Yeah, sorry. Wasn't trying to contradict you. I was actually backing up your point.
