Another frustrating loss that shouldn't have happened. Saw some good things tonight. However, still seeing some of the same stupid mistakes that have plagued us for years. This team needs to learn a killer instinct. Once it does that I think we will see a team we can have hope in.
The good:
1. The defense for the most part looked good. I am excited to see what this defense can do when it gets more comfortable with Rob Ryan's schemes. Whether this defense can be good is dependant on whether we can keep our top 3 CB's on the field. It wasn't until Jenkins and Scandrick went out that the Jets were able to really do anything on offense. You take out the top 3 CB's on any team and see how they perform.
2. Dez Bryant when healthy is a beast....unfortunately there's no telling if he can stay healthy. The way Dez plays lends itself to injuries yet that is also what makes him so special.
3. Lee showed the reason why the coaches were so high on him. He was everywhere tonight. Keep it up Lee!
4. Considering we have two rookies and a second year player on the starting line (with only 1 start between them) playing against a complex Rex Ryan defense, I though they played relatively well. Once they get more experience together and and can recognize the defensive fronts, I think we will be happy with this young OL. I know most will say did you see the game no running game and pressure on Romo all night long. But If I were to tell you two months ago that you would have a 1st rd rookie, a 7th rd rookie and UDFA in his second season starting against the jets and we put up 24 points (which should have been 27 -31 points) without getting Romo killed you would have thought that was a great performance. Just give them time and they will only get better.
5. Witten and Scandrick played like they deserved their new contracts. Witten was what he always has been clutch. Of course if he can get those extra two yards we would probably celebrating a victory instead lamenting on this loss. Scandrick played well until he went out with his injury. I hope it doesn't keep him out long.
The bad:
1. Injuries - losing your top three CB's and a gimpy Dez will result in a loss 9 times out of ten. I think we missed Bennet's blocking as well. I truely believe if we were healthy, we would have won this game by double digits.
2. Brookings is done. He is just too slow out there.
3. Running game - 26 rushes for 64 yards. We seriously need to improve on this performance if we want to stay competitive. T. Choice and D, Murray had 5 rushes for 4 yards. I was not impressed with Choice or Murray.
4. Alan Ball - same ole Alan Ball. Please get better quick Jenkins, Scandrick and Tnew.
The Ugly:
1. Jason Garret - called a pretty good game overall but for some reason always goes against convential wisdom in the redzone. When you are on the 2 yard line with a lead, you have to try to run it in. Give your team a chance to win. If he didn't get cute and try to pass, we wouldn't have put Tony in the position choke the game away. The second bad decision was leaving Dez in the game. a Gimpy Dez against Revis is a losing proposition. He should have given OT or Holley a chance in that situation.
2. Romo - what can I say. Bad decisions continue to keep Romo from being mentioned with the elite QB's. Romo needs to learn to stop trying to force plays. had he just thrown it away at the goal line we would have had a 10 point lead with 5 min to play. If he threw it away instead of trying to force it to Dez, we still would have had three more opportunities to get into FG position to win the game. It's these boneheaded plays that allows the Romo bashing to continue.
3. penalties - although 7-40yds doesn't sound so bad, twice we had back to back penalties that killed drives. We cannot continue to waste opportunities with stupid mental pre-snap penalties. I can deal with occaisionally losing the one-on-one battles but when you give the defense a 10 yard advantage before the snap that is unacceptable. I though Garret was supposed to correct these mental errors.
Overall, it was a hard disappointing loss. I still have hope that Garett can change things. As long as he does a better job in the red zone play calling, cleans up the unnecessary penalties, and continues to motivate the team to play hard I still think we can win 9-10 games (assuming we can get most of our injured players healthy).
