Not gonna sugar coat it, I didnt like the pick for Dallas. But i do understand why it was made. And those reasons are 2. Sean Lee's and Jaylon Smith's health.
There's no doubt in time he will be a good player because he's smart and he does and knows his job. You look at his size and the first thing you think of is the Cowboys have been missing something in the run defense since McClain. But dont let the size fool you, Vander Esch is not a physical LBer. You can actually say he plays a little soft relying on dragging a player down from behind rather than taking on the ballcarrier. So he's not normally going to make the play if the play is coming right at him and you see this when BSU played better teams in Fresno State and Oregon. From time to time he will mix it up inside but those times arent as consistent as you would like ur MLB to be. And then theres the 1 yr of starting exp to think about. Who has been keeping him on the bench? BSU had any kind blue chip LBer that has kept him on the bench.
IN the passing game, he's not going to be on the field to start his career in the nickle package. Watch the Fresno State game. He is on roller skates out on the field when faced with speed. Athletic QB can make him miss as McMaryion did but Vander Esch has speed to catch up and make a tackle from behind. Which isnt a good thing all the time because if he's missing tackles as he did vs fresno state the QB is taking off with nobody in front of him as fresno state did for big gains.
For a person if his size, he doesnt take on blocks and doesnt show the ability to really fight off the block consistantly. As the competition got better, he becomes more eh. This draft pick just looks like the team keeping Sean Lee's injury history in mind with this type of pick. Of course with a pro camp maybe he can get some of these bad habits out of the way but until he does i dont like this pick. I dont hate it because the kid will do his job and not try to play hero.
I just think Dallas drafted a player who is going to spend the first yr maybe the 2nd yr as a backup as they did with Charlton last yr. Its a good pick if they plan on moving on from Lee in 2019 or 2020. But i dont see him making much of a impact in 2018 unless he gets more physical.
