First I want to say our guys across the team looked rusty and I think a big part of that is how we handle preseason. Leaving starters out when they need to play is crazy and we start off slow every year because of it. That has to change, Dez 1 catch 8 yards isn't cutting it. Beasley with drops, OL out of sync all can be said for no action much in preseason.
Dak.....I thought he played well giving that it was his first game. He threw 45 times with 0 turnovers. WRs didn't help much with drops and 2 of them should have been TDs and 1 a huge first down. Some of his passes were high but under pressure he didn't panic and thought he did well getting rid of the ball without taking a sack. He will improve but mostly he scored every drive in the first half. Those FGs will become TDs eventually.
Running backs......Zeke TD was beautiful. OL didn't do him much favors but he needs to let blocks set up and not get in a rush. On a screen pass he couldn't get free from the defense and Prescott had to throw it away.
Morris looked well in the few carries he had. Zeke was featured way too much and Giants could tell every time we were running it stacking 8 in the box.
Dunbar was a non factor and made some mistakes. Would like to see Jackson get a couple snaps.
TE and WRs.......Dez, Beasley, Witten and Williams all dropped balls. Dez and Beasley both dropped TDs that hurt. Butler had a very nice grab but didn't get many looks. Swaim also had a nice catch and run for a first down but was his only target of the night. Witten had some issues blocking as did the OL in general. Didn't notice Escobar at all.
OL......looked better in pass protection then run blocking but not by much. In the first half they gave Dak plenty of time to go through his reads until Free started having fits with JPP. Martin and Collins had their worst game since entering the league. Harrison and Hankins are two of the biggest DTs duo we should see this year so they will improve. Frederick was our best OL and Smith went out with injury. Green came in and was ok.
DL.....got some pressure which got Eli to throw an interception in the 3rd quarter. McClain played very well. Mayowa had a sack which was good to see. Giants were getting the ball out quick which hurt the pass rush but times they were able to get in the backfield and sometimes couldn't. Was good in the first half against the run but once their passing game got going we started getting gashed with the run.
LB......didn't play well. Lee wasn't all over the ball like usually, seemed rusty or injury is more then we know. Wilber, Durant and Hitchens were out of place multiple times and Hitchens gave up huge plays including TD catches. We need to be better here and I think is the worst group on defense.
Secondary......overall played very well. Giants have very explosive WRs and for the most part we kept them contained. Claiborne played very well, when he couldn't get a hand on the ball he was aware enough to knock Odell out of bounds before he could get his feet down. Carr had an interception and was glad to see him jump the route. Brown was in position a few times but as a rookie in first action wasn't too bad. Scandrick got beat by Odell for 50 and Jones was late getting over to help. Other then that Jones played well and I think Scandrick needs to knock the rust off. Church played better then last year and Wilcox had a very decent game including a great tackle to get the ball back to the offense. If Wilcox misses that tackle giants run the clock out.
Coaches.......biggest reason we lost. Game plan was good at first but they couldn't or wouldn't adjust. Play calling was atrocious, a screen pass to Witten back against our endzone on 3rd and forever. Recievers run all day to develop routes and to be honest they called better plays in preseason. Twice we were 1st and goal and settled for FGs. Once we should have went for it. No trick plays, no Whitehead end a rounds, and hardly any motions unless it was Whitehead which was a run play.
The sky isn't falling and a rookie QB went toe to toe with a division foe who many think we will the division and lost by 1 point. Hate to lose but we knew it would be some growing to do without Romo. I'm willing to bet we have a better showing next week and still excited for this team
