Burnett a game-time decision

Lost in all the big news this week was the possibility the Cowboys could be without a key defensive and special teams performer in St. Louis.

Coach Wade Phillips said this morning that Kevin Burnett, a linebacker in the nickel and dime packages and the team leader in special teams tackle, will be a game-time decision because of a calf injury.

Burnett sat out practice Wednesday and Thursday with the injury left over from Sunday's OT loss at Arizona.

"He obviously wants to play, but it's another injury situation where we just have to see where he is," Phillips said.

If Burnett can't play, the Cowboys will likely turn to Bobby Carpenter to fill in on the substitution packages.

The loss of Burnett and Sam Hurd on the special teams could be offset by the arrival of linebacker Carlos Polk, an eighth-year player from Nebraska who played for Phillips when he was San Diego's defensive coordinator. The Cowboys signed Polk yesterday after placing Sam Hurd (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

"He's real enthusiastic, really gets fired up special teams-wise and makes plays," Phillips said of Polk. "He has good instincts getting to the football."

Right, I would prefer the Cowboys play Zach or Roy in that spot if Burnett can't go.

Burnett drilled Kurt Warner last week, and I didn't see him giving up plays in the passing game last week in coverage. In fact, I didn't see him give up anything in the passing game in coverage. At least, I don't recall anything that stood out. He is one of our best special teams players. They were doubling him last week on punt coverage.

He played a ton in last the game last year against the Rams.

I hope he plays, becasue Dallas needs him.
