Injuries could be too much for Cowboys to overcome

A couple of weeks ago, I pretty much figured it was a slam dunk the Cowboys would be 1-0 entering Week 2.

But that was before Terence Newman came up lame with a foot injury.

It was also before Kevin Burnett had ankle surgery. And it was way before Terry Glenn said he wasn't sure he would be able to play in the opener.

Now I'm thinking the Giants pull off the upset.

Note the word "thinking." I haven't made up my mind yet on which way to go.

But I do know this: If Glenn doesn't play, the Cowboys will be without a true deep threat to stretch the defense.

And I also know this: Bradie James is right to bemoan the lack of depth at linebacker. The Cowboys have eight linebackers on their 53-man roster, but really the number is only five. Greg Ellis isn't likely to play, and newly acquired rookie Justin Rogers won't be much help. Burnett is probably out as well.

Then there's rookie Anthony Spencer, who will start in place of Ellis at strongside linebacker. Considering the way Spencer struggled against the run in the preseason, the Giants will probably send 264-pound Brandon Jacobs right at him.

"The depth at linebacker (is a concern)," James said. "I'm not trying to push any buttons -- but this is a 3-4. I've never been on or seen a (3-4) team that has eight linebackers. In the 3-4, you usually have 10 or 11 at least. We are just trying to figure out where they are going with the depth.

"If they are talking about us getting a break, I don't see who can come in and give us a break."

And right now, I don't see how the Cowboys can be favored by 5 1/2 points.
