Jenkins credits Phillips for scheme that stopped Eagles wideouts

DALLAS - In sweeping Philly, the Cowboys held the Eagles' explosive receiving duo of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin to only 11 catches for 167 and no touchdowns.

The reason why? Wade Phillips' scheme, says CB Mike Jenkins.

Jenkins said Phillips instructed him and Terence Newman not to gamble, to just play Jackson and Maclin straight.

"Wade is always going to put you in a good position," Jenkins said. "Just don't try to do too much. Some guys like to gamble. That'll kill you."

A few things to worry about

DALLAS - It's hard to find fault in the Cowboys' performance in smashing the Eagles 24-0 on Sunday, but there were a few problem spots:

1) PENALTIES: The Cowboys had a whopping 11 for minus-80 yards. Leading the way was the offensive line, which finished with four, including three by Andre Gurode. The Pro Bowl center had two holds and one false start.

2) THE KICKING GAME: Just when you think Dallas has finally solved its kicking woes, Shaun Suisham misses a 30-yard attempt in the fourth quarter wide left after making a 44-yarder to give Dallas a 17-0 lead in the second.

"I thought he made it," Wade Phillips said, "but they said he didn't. He hit the ball good. Unfortunately, you're not going to make every one of them. It definitely was not too crucial of a time at 24-0."

I'm glad Wade told Jenkins and Newman to play it straight and not gamble. If you use good techinque you will put yourself in a position to make a play on the ball but the main thing is to get in there and knock balls down and make sure tackles when they are able to hang on to the ball. If McNabb is a bit off target due to the rush the int will come. Lastnight Philly CB were trying to jump on passes only to be left looking like fools as they gave up some big plays.

Speaking of gambling, everyone loves INTs but how about Samuel giving up repeated huge plays to us when he gambles and is a step slow? Miles did it this game on the long play down the sideline, but even Crayton had the huge post before the end of the first half up in Philly.

Main thing for Dallas continue to play defense as a unit. Everyone wants to be a hero but sometimes guys trying to be heros end up costing their teams.

I was discussing Samuel with someone and I brought this up specifically. How Samuel gambles all the time. Because he wants to make a play or just doesn't want to have to tackle. I take solid play without 10 INTs vs 10 INTs and 15 big plays when I failed to get the INT.

I've bashed Wade in the past as a head coach, but he's one of the great defensive minds of the game. Our defense is amazing, and I give Wade a huge share of the credit for that.

I've had to teach my 115lb team that very thing. Don't try to play the hero. Play your position. If you're a corner, don't try to run down the line to make a tackle. Watch for a fake or reverse. It's the line and the middle linebacker's job to make the tackle up the middle.

We had to stress this and stress this and stress this. Fortunately, they got it.

We won the championship this year. :D

This is important. It's like an option of each drive is completely taken away and we have to seriously compensate by not allowing anything resembling a close game. Defense is going to have to really keep up what they've been doing and offense has to quit jerking around with the penalties they committed yesterday.

Like Wade and Flo, I thought he made, but haven't even seen a replay so I have no idea. I'm sure if he had it would have come up by now.

That is what playing great defense is about. You can't have a player free lancing out there or chasing plays they need to honor their responsibility. You have to come up and make good solid tackles and players can't stand around watching someone make a tackle get to the ball carrier you need guys swarming to the ball carrier. All too often you see defenders watching and the runner ends up breaking the solo tackle.

considering who the officials were in this game the penalties did not surprise me a bit. they missed more then they called and that is saying a lot.

IIRC he also gambled on the Witten TD. If he makes those gambles pay off it's a different ball game, and he's had success this year. However, we showed what happens when he misses. I prefer what we're doing.

I'm pretty sure that if a team has any intentions of beating these Cowboys, they'd better be able to run the ball effectively.
