IRVING - As the only linebacker at rookie minicamp, Cowboys second-round draft pick Sean Lee is getting plenty of attention from his position coach, Reggie Herring.

"It forces you to concentrate and be on edge every time and be ready for go," Lee said. "For a rookie trying to learn, it's a great situation."

Herring is teaching Lee both inside linebacker positions.

"He's like a magnet, just sucking in information," Herring said. "He wants to learn. He gets upset when he doesn't do things right. It bothers him when he does things wrong, and it's very obvious. That's where it all starts. Do you care? Are you committed? Are you consistent? The ones that succeed are that way."

IRVING, Texas -- Wade Phillips joked that Sean Lee looked like a boxer with an entourage during rookie minicamp workouts.

Lee is the only linebacker out there, but he isn't lonely. He has linebackers coach Reggie Herring and defensive assistant Bobby King, who took over from Dat Nguyen, watching his every move. And the Cowboys' athletic training staff has given Lee a lot of attention this weekend as they try to find a knee brace that he likes.

Although Lee would rather ditch the knee brace, the second-round pick is loving every second of it.

"It forces you to concentrate and be on edge all the time and be ready to go," said Lee, a football junkie who spends quality time with his playbook before bed every night. "As a rookie, as a young guy who wants to learn, I think it's the best situation."

Lee hasn't participated in the competitive pass coverage drills as a precautionary measure, because he's still waiting to get a knee brace that feels right. (His old brace from Penn State was shipped to Valley Ranch, but he said it no longer fit because his leg has gotten bigger while working out without a brace since football season.)

Herring, however, has seen enough to reinforce the belief that the guy the Cowboys had No. 14 overall on their draft board was a steal.

"He’s like a magnet, just sucking in information," Herring said. "He wants to learn. He gets upset when he doesn’t do things right. It bothers him when he does things wrong, and it’s very obvious.

"That’s where it all starts. Do you care? Are you committed? Are you consistent? Guys like that usually are consistent."

this kid is going to be my favorite cowboy in 3 years.

The only bummer is his age (he'll be 24 before the season starts). That's roughly two years of lost service.

i think the only way this kid isnt all over the field on sundays is if he is injuried. i hope he stays healthy.

All of these one-on-one reps that Lee is getting could really speed along his development. When there is so much information to take in, every single rep makes a difference. I expect that he'll make a decent contribution to the defense this year.

They cloned Keith Brooking. No one can convince me different.

And his parents deserve a hand for doing a great job in raising him.

Grandfather is a District Court Judge up in PA.

He just lost his Grandmother on April 14th too. Feel for the kid.

He's already in my top five fav players.

Take a year off of wear and tear on his frame because he sat out the 2008 season.

And his teammates still voted him a team captain even though he was on 'IR'.

I get as excited as the next guy when we find a young talent who is very young and so can have a crazy long Cowboys career(Witten, etc.), but I don't think I'd call him being 24 as a rookie a bummer. We could win 6 Super Bowls before the guy turns 30. :laugh1:

When Coach Paterno called him the best LB since Jack Ham, I got impressed quickly. I was surprised by the pick but I let out a little shout. I didn't see the Jack Ham but I trust Coach Paterno. And I trust the scouting department that had him ranked so high.

There's optimism, and then there's OPTIMISM.

I am high on this kid as well. I think Brooking is a perfect comparison especially with what Brooking did last year as a leader.

I do have a question though about this kid for those with a medical background or just know more about Lee could help with. What is the deal with him needing his brace or a brace period? I know it's been a year since his injury so does that mean he isn't fully healed? Or is this just for precautionary reasons? From all that I have read recently, it seems like he really needs the brace to play which would be a downer in the short term.

Lee wears the brace on his left knee which is the one he sprained in september of 2009.

He tore the ACL in his right knee in April of 2008.

Cowboys second-round ILB Sean Lee is getting his knee fitted with a custom brace.

Lee continues to downplay his need for a brace, but the fact remains that he is coming off of a torn right ACL and sprained left PCL. If healthy, the Penn State product is an excellent tackler and gap shooter against the run that will push for immediate playing time.

Thanks. I had no idea the other knee was sprained last year.

Shouldn't that be a concern? I would have thought a sprain would have been healed by now.
