The Wade Phillips Show

IRVING - It was a relaxed, playful Wade Phillips who chatted for nearly 15 minutes with reporters following his press briefing Monday afternoon.
Among the highlights: Phillips poking fun at two former Cowboys coaches.
Asked if there was a deeper explanation for Tony Romo going three games without throwing an interception, Phillips said, "It's one of my rules with quarterbacks. I have three rules and one of them is don't throw interceptions for three games."
In case you don't remember, Bill Parcells gave his list of 10 rules for quarterbacks to Tony Romo when Romo became a starter in 2006.
Phillips also did an imitation of Jimmy Johnson complete with lip smacking.
Three-game winning streaks will loosen everybody up.
Hurd finally shows up

DALLAS - The Cowboys had high hopes for Sam Hurd after he put together an impressive training camp.
But he fizzled out of the gate and got lost in the long shadow cast by Miles Austin.
That is until last Sunday.
Hurd's 36-yard catch-and-run TD was a thing of beauty. After making he catch over the middle, he outran two linebackers down the Seattle sideline and then outmaneuvered four defenders inside the 10 to get into the end zone.
"It was a tremendous play," Wade Phillips said. "I think he made four guys miss inside the 10-yard line, besides out running the linebackers to turn up the field on the play. Sam was in the mix to be playing early in the season also. Obviously there was a lot of question going in (about the receivers) and a lot of it was because a lot of them hadn't played. But I think we can see that the confidence we had in those guys was warranted."
Hurd also had three special teams tackles. Marring his performance was an illegal block in the back penalty. Still, all in all, it was one of his best days in his four-year pro career.
'Sophmore sensations' sizzled Sunday

DALLAS - That was Wade Phillips' assessment of cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick, who he has dubbed the team's "sophomore sensations."
In the 38-17 win over Seattle, Scandrick broke up two passes and returned a fumble 4 yards to set up a Marion Barber touchdown. Jenkins also broke up a pass.
Matt Hasselbeck didn't challenge Jenkins much, a sure sign that he's doing a good job in coverage.
"Jenkins and Scandrick, our two sophomore guys - sophomore sensations I call them - both played real well," Phillips said. "Orlando should have had some help on the touchdown, and he still almost made the play. I thought he played well. We kind of challenged him last week to pick up his game more and I think he did that. And then Jenkins didn't have much action, and part of it is because he's playing well, he did a good job against their guys."
Phillips said his challenge to Scandrick had nothing to do with his effort.
"I think it's just a technique thing we really challenged him with more than anything," Phillips said. "He's got a lot of athletic ability and he was kind of playing on his athletic ability rather than grinding on technique as much as he normally does. That was one great thing coming in as a rookie was he really worked his technique and had a really good year because of that. Somehow we let him lose that a little bit and we just talked to him about that, and he responded just like I knew he would."
Newman turning into disruptive force

DALLAS - Cowboys CB Terence Newman has never been known as a physical player. After all, he entered the season with only four forced fumbles in 87 career games.
But after producing a team-high three forced fumbles in the first seven games perhaps it's time to re-evaluate his skill set.
Newman's latest physical play came when he jarred the ball from Seattle RB Justin Forsett in the first quarter of Sunday's 38-17 win.
"Terence has really picked it up," Wade Phillips said. "He's hitting and making a lot more tackles than he has in the past."
