The Wade Phillips Show
By Tom Orsborn on Nov 3, 09 01:40 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Save & Share

IRVING - It was a relaxed, playful Wade Phillips who chatted for nearly 15 minutes with reporters following his press briefing Monday afternoon.

Among the highlights: Phillips poking fun at two former Cowboys coaches.

Asked if there was a deeper explanation for Tony Romo going three games without throwing an interception, Phillips said, "It's one of my rules with quarterbacks. I have three rules and one of them is don't throw interceptions for three games."

In case you don't remember, Bill Parcells gave his list of 10 rules for quarterbacks to Tony Romo when Romo became a starter in 2006.

Phillips also did an imitation of Jimmy Johnson complete with lip smacking.

Three-game winning streaks will loosen everybody up.

Hurd finally shows up

DALLAS - The Cowboys had high hopes for Sam Hurd after he put together an impressive training camp.

But he fizzled out of the gate and got lost in the long shadow cast by Miles Austin.

That is until last Sunday.

Hurd's 36-yard catch-and-run TD was a thing of beauty. After making he catch over the middle, he outran two linebackers down the Seattle sideline and then outmaneuvered four defenders inside the 10 to get into the end zone.

"It was a tremendous play," Wade Phillips said. "I think he made four guys miss inside the 10-yard line, besides out running the linebackers to turn up the field on the play. Sam was in the mix to be playing early in the season also. Obviously there was a lot of question going in (about the receivers) and a lot of it was because a lot of them hadn't played. But I think we can see that the confidence we had in those guys was warranted."

Hurd also had three special teams tackles. Marring his performance was an illegal block in the back penalty. Still, all in all, it was one of his best days in his four-year pro career.

'Sophmore sensations' sizzled Sunday

DALLAS - That was Wade Phillips' assessment of cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick, who he has dubbed the team's "sophomore sensations."

In the 38-17 win over Seattle, Scandrick broke up two passes and returned a fumble 4 yards to set up a Marion Barber touchdown. Jenkins also broke up a pass.

Matt Hasselbeck didn't challenge Jenkins much, a sure sign that he's doing a good job in coverage.

"Jenkins and Scandrick, our two sophomore guys - sophomore sensations I call them - both played real well," Phillips said. "Orlando should have had some help on the touchdown, and he still almost made the play. I thought he played well. We kind of challenged him last week to pick up his game more and I think he did that. And then Jenkins didn't have much action, and part of it is because he's playing well, he did a good job against their guys."

Phillips said his challenge to Scandrick had nothing to do with his effort.

"I think it's just a technique thing we really challenged him with more than anything," Phillips said. "He's got a lot of athletic ability and he was kind of playing on his athletic ability rather than grinding on technique as much as he normally does. That was one great thing coming in as a rookie was he really worked his technique and had a really good year because of that. Somehow we let him lose that a little bit and we just talked to him about that, and he responded just like I knew he would."

Newman turning into disruptive force

DALLAS - Cowboys CB Terence Newman has never been known as a physical player. After all, he entered the season with only four forced fumbles in 87 career games.

But after producing a team-high three forced fumbles in the first seven games perhaps it's time to re-evaluate his skill set.

Newman's latest physical play came when he jarred the ball from Seattle RB Justin Forsett in the first quarter of Sunday's 38-17 win.

"Terence has really picked it up," Wade Phillips said. "He's hitting and making a lot more tackles than he has in the past."

I feel bad for the beating that Wade takes. I firmly believe he is a fine football coach, and I think he's a very good man. The players all seem to love him, and that means something to me too.

I think we're going to start seeing the Orlando Scandrick we were all expecting at first for the remainder of the year.

Wade is a Texan, he grew up on the grid iron. He is the son of a coach and is now a lifer coach himself. He has forgotten more football than all those mediots who bash him have ever known.

Sure he comes across as some light hearted and goofy hick. But he is one helluva football mind. He is also one helluva human being. It is unfortunate that he gets beat on so badly, just cause he doesnt cheat like Belicheat or scowl like Cowher, or throw tantrums like Mora, Green, or Ditka.

I think if he had simply won a playoff game or two, he would get more respect from the mediots.

I will say this....he has my respect and my loyalty.

I'm not a Texan, but this is a guy that we should be proud of as Cowboys fans to have on our sidelines. He's a class act and a terrific football mind.

Wow. See what winning does?

I've always loved Wade. I can't help but feel he'll ride into the sunset one way or another after this season. I'm saddened that he will, and football will suffer from not having that defensive mind of his around.

Same here, I think he's a great head coach. Hopefully he will win the big one while his dad is still around. :)

This would be funny if it wasn't so likely to happen.

I feel like he is a fine coach. Unfortunately, press only care about the soundbites not the Ws.

Your right. I just wish he could be our defensive coordinator because we don't have anyone in place that really knows how to coach the Phillips 3-4.

Same here. I think people have a perception of Wade that is far from reality

I don't get to see the inside of the Cowboys locker room but I developed doubts about Wade during the December swoon last season and my doubts about his leadership remain. I don't dislike the man and his skills as a coach are not in question. What IS in question is his ability to lead the team and until we see wins in December AND January, those questions will remain.

LOL. I was thinking the same exact thing. Funny how that works. My feelings haven't changed for Wade. I think he is gone after this season as well as most of the coaching staff. I think of Wade as I do Romo. I like both, but, I don't think they are the guys to take Dallas all the way toa Super Bowl victory. I do SURELY hope I am completely wrrrrrrrrr.....ng about this as well. I think both get **** on enough that it would be cool for them to do it and just give the finger to doubters like myself and the media.

We were not playing lights out in Dec when Parcells was here either. Yes this team has to get over that hump if Wade can get them over that hump then he would have done what no other HC has done since Switzer.

I think with Wade's style you have to have leaders on the field. We have not had that in the past. If they continue to develope (the leaders) his style will do well.

I would have been fine with Jerry getting rid of Wade last year but I think the addition of Keith Brooking has changed this teams mindset. That is a lot of credit to give to one guy, and we will see if it holds true throughout the rest of the year but this team does not seem to have the same mindset they have had in the past few years so I am hopeful.

Any style of HC needs leaders on the field, even Bill Belicheck talks about needing leaders on the field.

DALLAS - Cowboys CB Terence Newman has never been known as a physical player. After all, he entered the season with only four forced fumbles in 87 career games.

Forced fumbles are great and all, but Newman is doing it the wrong way. He is lowering his shoulder instead of trying to wrap up and tackle. We've all seen what a mess Roy Williams became when all he tried to do was lay wood instead of completing the tackle.
