With Wade Phillips giving the veterans the morning off, third-string quarterback Stephen McGee got a ton more reps than he usually receives at practice.

"It was good work for me," the second-year player from Texas A&M said. "Usually I don't get that many reps, so you have to take advantage of opportunities like that."

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said McGee did just that.

"It was good to see him get extra work and get an opportunity to take control of the huddle," Garrett said. "He was in a number of situations he doesn't see very often. We aren't saying to him, 'Make the play a success,' we are saying to him, 'Make the right decision.' I like the progress he's making."

From the practice reports that I've read he has been awful. The kindest reports say that he hasn't had a chance to do much with the defense constantly in his face. In general, he hasn't impressed the bloggers on ESPN posted on this site.

But apparently he sounds impressive in the huddle.

I believe that McMahon said that he is making quicker decisions than last year.

Really, though, how could he look good getting harassed every play?

He seriously needs some reps with the better players this preseason.

Kind of hard to show much behind the 3rd string line vs the #1 defense. Ware and Spencer have not given him much time to do anything.

I don’t like McGee. Doesn’t impress me. I’d like to see more of Nichols.

Almost anyone would have said the same about Romo after his first year. He looked like a terrified deer caught in the headlights. McGee may not work out, but one preseason is not enough to judge by.

True and why he will have another preseason to show what he can do. But usually, you can see a glimpse of something special. Romo i remember his first preseason game (i think). He fumbled, then next drive threw a td bomb to (Randall Williams?). Not saying i knew Romo would be what he is now, but he showed something. McGee hasn’t shown anything other than checking the ball down. But, like you said, it’s early.

I don't think that was Romo's first preseason. I think it was his second. The first I was left scratching my head why they would keep the guy. His feet were always bouncing around like a scared rabbit. His second preseason he looked similar, but showed an ocassional flash. One I remember was when he was supposed to call a time out in a goalline situation but called a play instead. And it resulted in a TD. He still looked pretty damned nervous, but he was starting to show he had some balls. In his 3rd preseason we started seeing that the guy had a chance to actually be a quality NFL player.

I agree completely that McGee didn't show much last year. I was disappointed. I knew he was playing with lower level players, but like you I was looking for a flash of something. If I don't see a glimpse of that kind of flash this year my opinion will be right there with you.

There is such a thing as improving through adversity.

I disagree. Romo showed his potential from day 1, imo. His pocket presence was very impressive. He was too much of a gunslinger, but I think he's gotten past that now.

No offense, but I think you are remembering the Romo of 2005 - possibly 2004, although he still wason the jittery side then. 2003 he didn't show anything, and didn't even get that many snaps. The team was giving Hutchinson a look at the time.

Romo is a great player in this league right now.

But his first training camp and preseason he looked hopeless. He wouldnt even have made the team if not for Q-Bong being such a dumb****.

Wrong again. I found this info:

Fri., Aug. 15, 2003
Houston 6 Dallas 34

QB Quincy Carter went 10 of 17 for 141 yards. RB Troy Hambrick had 38 yards on 8 tries. QB Tony Romo completed 4 of 6 for 74 yards, which included a 60 yard touchdown to Randal Williams.

Damn i know my Cowboys.

Don't give up on McGee too soon. He has a strong arm – NFL caliber – and has the confidence. But, he doesn't have to work with premier talent. Remember, he was ruined by Francione at A&M because he was a run first, option second, run third, pass fourth type of guy there. Give Steven time. He'll be a great backup, if not a quality starting QB.

I think you are absolutely correct. A leader at every level so far. He'll be fine.

McGee never had time to do anything this last preseason. He had to scramble out of the pocket nearly every play. The one drive that was actually going well, he had us in the redzone, hung in the pocket to make the throw and had a defensive player land on his knee awkwardly.

Let's hold judgment for this kid until after this preseason.

Give him the entire second half of the Bengals game with Ogletree, Hurd and Dez as his WR's. Choice and Donaldson as his backs. Phillips and Marty B as his TE's.

If the kid can't lead the team to at least 14 points against the Bengals scrubs then I would be highly disappointed.
