Ryan likes ‘tough’ Coleman

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan called recent free agent signee Kenyon Coleman a “tough, proven” guy.

The Cowboys signed the veteran end to add depth to their defensive line.

The signing reunites Coleman with Ryan. Coleman started 27 of 29 games for Ryan in Cleveland from 2008-09, registering four sacks.

NO WAY!

Ryan couldn't possibly have WANTED Coleman! I was told we just signed him because he was cheap, and so is Jerry!

I like his candor about player assessment...it's refreshing. Not just your normal coach speak.

LOL. I was gonna point that out too. You can tell he's not BSing. He gave a frank assessment. This guy is just solid and he's a very good run stopping 3-4 DE. Pitts has a few guys like ie Aaron Smith.

But when he says something good about Spencer he's just pulling stuff out of his ***

Yup. We have no idea what is in Ryan's head. But it's likely Garrett is letting him have his way on his side of the ball, which is good. IMO.

Lol, and pairing him up with another 'just solid against the run' defensive end with Marcus Spears just has to be foolish because it doesn't make for a very tough run defense. And allow Anthony Spencer and Demarcus Ware to bring heat from the outside.....noooooo.

Great signing. I mean he's putting up sacks at 0.15 per start!

Remember the first Philly game of the 2010 season (Dallas home game) where we needed to get the ball back in the 4th Qtr and Philly basically ran nearly every play and ran out the clock?

That's hopefully not happening this year. Our DL will better control the line of scrimmage.

I just hope we dont bring in a bunch of Ryan players just to see the guy get a head coaching gig next season. Hopefully he will be our coordinator for a few years.

this signing reminds me of the Marcellus Wiley signing in 2004. We wanted Bert Berry but settled for Wiley when Arizona stole him. He hardly had an impact that season and nobody remembers this colossal failure since we moved to the 3-4 the following year.

With all the shenanigans Ryan uses to create pressure, it looks like Ryan is ok with guys like Igor/Spears/Coleman at DE primarily clogging up the run. It's certainly not a dynamic front 3, but Ratliff/Brent/Igor/Spears/Coleman is a sturdy 5.Hopefully a guy like Lissemore can provide some energy and pass rush in limited duty.

Not a good comparison. Wiley was brought in to be a 4-3 DE who could provide a pass rush. Coleman is being brought in as a 3-4 DE to stop the run. He'll do that and wont disappoint. Sure it would be nice to have a 3-4 DE who can do both but those guys are rare.

I was comparing the impact an average guy like Wiley and Coleman can have on the field. Sure run stoppers are nice but Hatcher and Bowen were better. We're actually getting worse.

lol wat?

Hatcher, in no plane of existence is better than Coleman.

Bowen is better at getting to the QB, sure....but stopping the run? That's debatable.

Other than that, I agree to an extent that Coleman is a JAG......but if there is anywhere in a 3-4 that you can have great success with a JAG, it's at DE.

If it happens Matt Eberflus would be an excellent replacemnt.

No way was Jason Hatcher a better run defender than Coleman.

That's what this team needs, tough guys who just get the job done... You don't need flashy players at every position to be a great team.

I think more than likely he is a rotation guy on run plays. We're still looking for D-linemen.

it is not all about the stats (i.e., sacks) that makes you a good player. for example, look at nmadi...he only had 3 ints last season. it is all about the skills that you provide to the scheme.
