HOUSTON — Matt Schaub's maturation as an NFL quarterback is far from complete, but it would be unfair to overlook the numbers he's compiled through six games and his projections for the rest of the season.
If Schaub stays healthy and continues on his current pace, he'll have 4,832 yards, 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
To show just how impressive those statistics would be, consider this: Warren Moon never threw for more than 4,690 yards and 33 touchdowns despite playing in the run-and-shoot with the Oilers.
“Last year, I think Matt knew mostly everything, and now he definitely knows everything,” right tackle Eric Winston said Wednesday during preparations for Sunday's game against San Francisco at Reliant Stadium. “The feeling you get when you're out there watching him throw and you're with him in the meetings (is that) he knows exactly what to do with the ball on every play against every coverage.
“Anytime you have a hot hand back there, a guy who all you have to do is give him some time and he's going to pick someone apart, that's a great feeling. And it makes you want to do your job even more.”
In his past 16 regular-season games dating back to last season, Schaub has 4,651 yards, 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Schaub has completed 37 passes of 25 or more yards. Tony Romo (38) is the only quarterback with more 25-plus plays than Schaub during that 16-game stretch.
“His numbers are exceptional,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We've been throwing it probably more than we have in the past, so his numbers are up, but he's just playing better. His biggest games have been on the road, so that tells you the way he's grown up.”
Dating back to December of last year, Schaub leads the NFL with an average of 309.1 yards a game.
He has 19 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 99.7 rating.
Schaub leads the league with 14 touchdown passes. His 1,810 yards are second.
“For me to be doing what I'm doing and what our offense is doing, we have guys who are playing hard and making plays,” Schaub said. “That's what it comes down to — completing passes, letting your guys work for you and making plays downfield.
“Our pass-blocking has been exceptional.”
