Myth about halftime adjustments

I'm in the middle of this debate. I think halftime adjustments are a real thing, but its different than what people make it out to be. It's typically more subtle adjustments than installing a completely new game plan. For these adjustments being made teams probably already had been working on them in practice all week as plan B/C. Its typically more smaller conversations along the lines of "when we run our base defense they are doubling player x up front when we thought they would double player y, so lets mix in some angle plays to free up player x for some 1v1 looks"
Kind of his I feel…did 49ers make some adjustments at half? Yes. If they didn’t would the outcome be different…I don’t think so. We can’t stop the run.

Super Bowl XXVIII. Cowboys losing to Buffalo 13-6 at the half. On offense, the Cowboys make a change to how they are calling the running game where they go with Nate Newton pulling to the right leading Emmitt Smith. The offense wasn’t stopped in the second half, and the Cowboys rolled.

Halftime adjustments can make a difference. More often than not, those adjustments are made in real time as the game plays itself out.

The Cowboys didn’t have a counter on D. Zim had a bear front to stop the run and blitz when they were in shot gun. It worked in the first half. Zim even brought some zone pressures. Once Kittle started cooking guys (Wilson) in man coverage along with not being able to contain Purdy scrambling Zim had nothing left.

One of the biggest myths in football. Ask a coach from HS upward and they will tell you “halftime adjustments” are a huge myth.
That has not been my experience at all, and I have played the game at three levels. halftime adjustments were most certainly made every single game.

Not only that, but we have ALL seen teams perform halftime adjustments and blow the doors off the Cowboys doing so. I guess you don't want to believe your lying eyes.

They just reevaluate what’s been working, and what’s not been working. I think the plan basically stays the same,

Sounds about right, considering halftime is all of twelve minutes which includes the time getting in and out of the locker room.

It’s essentially a glorified timeout.

I do remember being a kid and thinking that Coach Landry was making genius type adjustments at the half and that’s why they had many second half comebacks. Halftime was much longer then, so maybe he was. I’d like to continue to think so.

How about win one for the Gipper? Raw-Raw speeches coming out of the locker room at the half with the Rocky theme song blasting...

The game plan along with any other issues that may arise are discussed and practiced during the week. Game day is too late. Only minor details are discussed then for example due to injury or just poor play.

Obviously, HC aren’t gonna go into detail in a press conference as to what they do. They’ll tell you it’s a myth.

If you want to limit it to just “halftime” adjustments, then maybe. But there is just no way the best coaches don’t adjust as the game goes on. I do not want semantics (of when the adjustments take place) to minimize their importance.

The Eagles are -26 point differential in the first quarter of games this year, but +65 in quarters 2 through 4. I feel fairly confident that coaching adjustments play a part in this.

Not a myth. Possibly overstated at times by fans/media/etc....but some coaches like Joe Gibbs have legendary reputations for making in-game/halftime adjustments. I've listened to countless former Washington players rave about Gibbs and this very thing.
In game happen every series. That’s why they have iPads. But the idea that they come up with a whole new plan in 5 mins is unrealistic

The one that worked was play action from under center rather than passing from the shotgun formation where they faced the blitz everytime and Purdy had to throw quick.

Cowboys could have maybe tried someone faster than Donovan Wilson to cover kittle but that would have been too easy...

I just really think you’re getting hooked up on the “halftime” part of it. Adjustments are certainly made by coaches…on at least one sideline, in almost every game.

If they’re not… Why the hell would they let the quarterbacks look at an iPad in between drives? Let’s not get caught up in semantics of when the adjustments actually happen

...well, it only makes sense to tell your team, how they can go it about 2nd half.

THose 15mins are luxury, cause you have everyone around.
