This kid has been a walking mash unit since before he was drafted in 2011. But his last healthy season, he was a beast under Wannstedt in Pitt. Romeus is a true 4-3 DE and likely why he was discarded from the Saints (who are moving to a 3-4 base).

If HEALTHY, then former blue chipper All American DE Romeus at 6'5 270 4.69 might be a low risk high reward candidate for the PS. Columbo part deux?

New Orleans Saints Waive DE Greg Romeus

By NewOrleansSaints.com

Romeus, 6-5, 267, was originally selected by the Saints as a seventh round draft pick (226th overall) in 2011 from Pittsburgh, where he was a four-year letterman. Romeus played in 40 games with 28 starts for the Panthers and finished his college career with 142 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 38.5 stops for losses, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception, 12 passes defensed and four blocked kicks. He did not see any action in his first two NFL seasons, recovering from a pair of knee injuries.

He's worth a look. Between his knees and his back issues from college, I wouldn't expect much.

I watched him play at Pitt, my alma mater, and was hoping the Cowboys would draft him. Hopefully, the Cowboys will bring him in if he is healthy.

You are right about that. But it would be the equivalent of NFL pennies to bring him in. And there is no rush or great expectations so Cowboys can afford to bring him along slow, even PS or IR him the this year if necessary.

Again, he may never be 100%, but if he does .....

..we are not.

We don't want anymore castaways, homeless and players with injury histories for whatever reason.

We tried that with Canti. Didn't work. We tried that with so many over the years, too and it never works.

Canty played well when he was here and reasonably well with the Giants for the few games he was healthy. Getting 4 years of starting out of a 4th round pick for less than $1M/yr is actually a pretty good result.

We also had success with Marc Colombo who started and played well for about five seasons or so before tailing off at the end in 2010.

We have had some failures. I really don't mind bringing in former highly thought of players who didn't succeed at their initial sotp in the league so long as you can project them to get healthy again. Sometimes a player who is a failure in one system with one set of coaches will find success elsewhere for a variety of reasons.

When you are strapped for cash and don't have extra draft picks you have to look extra hard for cheap prospects to try and develop. There is very little harm in bringing someone in just to kick the tires. The only fault lies in giving big amounts of guaranteed money to iffy players. That's how jobs are lost at GM, at least in other places.

No thanks at this point. If a player can't step in and contribute right now, forget him.
For several reasons.
Salary cap issues, sign a player just to stash in on IR. What if he isn't injured to do that, but yet doesn't show enough to make the team. This takes away reps from another player.

If he can't help this year, then you wait until next year, would they pass on a FA or a player in the draft because the took a flyer on this guy.

Let's see what we have in TC first.

1. I don't know if he is eligible for the Practice Squad if he was on the regular IR. There is a practice squad IR which the Cowboys used on Danny Coale and a regular IR for players that are receiving a full NFL salary. My guess is that being on the regular IR is equivalent to be on the active roster in terms of Practice Squad eligibility.

2. I don't know about the 4.69 forty time. He didn't run at the combine or his Pro Day.

3. The Saints move to the 3-4 could have been a factor in releasing him before training camp. In the draft info that I found, he was projected to 4-3 DE only and not 3-4 OLB.

4. The possible downside to signing him is the possibility of injury. If he has a season ending injury in training camp, then the team will have to pay his full salary for the year. This would count about 500K against the salary cap.

I am not sure what you mean?

What I mean is that he would be a low cost, low risk option with potential, but, being that he had back problems at Pitt and knee issues in New Orleans, I wouldn't expect much from the look.

I hope this is a form of sarcasm because, otherwise, it's right down silly.

It not only " worked " with Canty, it " worked " so well that he was able to parlay that performance into a 42 million dollars contract and with then world champions. Columbo was also a big success.

When you get first day talent in the 4th rnd or free agency and they produce for you, even if it's just for a short while, you tip your hat to the football gods and say " thank you ".
