Name That Player...

I'll name another one of recent memory that were drafted by the Cowboys...

Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith.

I thought we got a steal with Mike Mickens in the 7th round. He was really a good college corner at Cincinnati but just never panned out for some reason. I know he ended up in Tampa Bay for a minute, but I don't know what became of him....obviously not much as a football player.

I think it's hilarious that folks feel obligated to still tell you who they "hit" on.

It's like "yeah, I missed on that guy, but what about thiiiiiiiiiiiiis guy!"

:D

Blame me, I think I set the precedent in this thread for that.

Not exactly a draft pick, but I thought that Drew Henson would be better than Romo.

In sort of a reverse "miss," I thought Carson Palmer was going to be a scrub when he came out of USC. He's not All-World, but he certainly proved me wrong.

My biggest misses were definitely Byron Leftwich and Mike Williams.

I loved Leftwich, thought with his intangibles he'd be elite. Mike Williams (USC), thought he would completely dominate.

There's lots of others, but those two--especially Williams--were the most wrong.

I was also dead wrong on Julius Jones--I was one of the only fans really happy on draft day on the forums. I firmly believed he was the best RB in the draft. I don't feel too bad about that miss though, because I do believe his career would've been different with a different coach.

Hits:
DeSean Jackson: Fell in love with the guy while he was at college. Thought he'd translate his playmaking ability to the pros and he did. Most of the people on the board, if i remember correctly, thought he was too small.

Greg Jennings: I was at Western Michigan at the same time he was. Only made it to one game in person, but it was absolutely impressive how noticeable it was that he was the best player on the field. I thought he'd be a solid #2. He surpassed even my expectations.

Misses:
Jimmy Clausen: I thought he had a great delivery and could make all the throws. He just made QB look easy. It might be too early to write him off, though most have, but I never thought the Panthers would have to draft another QB the very next year (though that seems to have worked out pretty well for them).

Charles Rogers: I'm a big MSU fan, and he was unbelievable in college. We went from Plaxico to Rogers, and by all accounts Rogers was the more dominant player. I truly believe he's one of the biggest wastes of god given talent in the past 20 years or so. He should have been an impact WR.

It's a lot harder to remember the misses than the hits. Maybe that's why everyone thinks they're such great prognosticators.

I actually write down my comments for as many draft picks as I can and then revisit them to see how they panned out and where I might have overvalued/undervalued players. It's done wonder of my evaluation of certain positions but others I still struggle. So, myself I know a list of players I was wrong about.

This is going to hurt.

Bobby Carpenter
Mike Williams, USC version
Antaaj Hawthorne
Drew Henson
Byron Leftwich

Bruises all over my ego.

I wanted Jamaal Charles bad instead of Felix.

So far I've been wrong about Ingram. We'll see how it all unfolds though.

Ryan Leaf. I still felt Manning was the better of the 2 but had no clue that Leaf would bomb as bad as he did.

Ooh, another one I appear to be wrong about is Golden Tate. I thought he'd be amazing. I haven't heard his name once in the past two years. Not looking good there.

Lol, someone mentioned Teyo Johnson.....lol, that's a good name right there!

I think Tate still has some hope. I think he's victim to poor QB play too.

I was certain this guy was a player that could revolutionize the TE position but his ultimate failing IMO was he never bought into being a TE, which was the very reason he left college.

I thought when Tate came out he should go to the same team that drafted Clausen. I'd be curious to see if a QB and WR from the same college team were drafted by the same NFL team in the same draft. It would stand to reason that the two would already have a rapport with each other allowing each to see the field much quicker.

Edit: I would not be surprised if the Browns attemp it this year with Griffin and Wright.

Hit: Jamaal Charles.

Miss: AOA. I guess I bought into the hype.

I still don't fault the team for selecting AOA. A player with those measureables that looked that good in game footage is worth a shot in the 4th round.

It appears that his main issue was the same a Bobbie Carpenter's...just didn't enjoy contact. Poodle claims that he was very smart and a quick learner. He had the measureables. He didn't appear to be a bad character guy.

The other option is Poodle screwed him up. He started 2 games for the Titans last season.

Totally agree. That what I meant. Measureables were there, game film was there, seemed smart and had character, just didn't translate on the field. He looked slower than his 40 time when he was here. I had high hopes for him and appear to be wrong.
