All that comes to mind by the round shape is some sort of an outdoor amphitheater. Combined with the barren terrain, all I can think of is a movie like Gladiator w/ Russell Crowe. So maybe the site for the movie's Roman Colosseum?

Or maybe the arena where Oliver Reed's character fought his gladiators before getting to go to Rome... the out of the way dump of a place??? Can't recall the name.

My first impulse guesses, anyway.
