Retired NASCAR driver Dick Trickle dies of apparent self-inflicted wound
(CNN) -- Richard "Dick" Trickle -- who parlayed a legendary reputation as a short-track driver into a full-time career on stock car racing's biggest stages in the 1990s -- died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, a North Carolina sheriff's office said. He was 71.
A Lincoln County dispatcher received a call -- believed to have been placed by Trickle -- that "there would be a dead body and it would be his," that county's sheriff's office said in a news release. There was no answer when authorities tried to call the number back.
Emergency units went to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City and found a body lying near Trickle's pickup truck.
This has been a dead thread. How about that backstretch being completely empty in the stands? Kind of depressing.
They closed it off and after this race they are tearing it down due to lack of fans and as part of the improvements to the track. Better for them to be gone than empty. As far as the race it was great that they let them race to the finish after the wreck on the last lap.Sucks that Jimmie (spelled like a girl) Johnson won.
Oh I didn't know that. At the 500 those stands were full weren't they?
Why is Nascar dying a slow death, well besides Jimmie Johnson? Bristol, Kasey Kahne scared to bump Matt Kenseth out of the way at the end. pathetic. Too many nice drivers
Yeah that was pretty disappointing. Not only the 2nd place driver not doing everything it takes to get the win but Bristol is usually the track where drivers who have been dumped earlier in the season get a little payback.
I think drivers are way to comfortable now, the passion and win at all cost attitudes have been replaced with big paychecks and corporate correctness. There are very few drivers now who will risk everything to get the win and will just take what they get so they can get back on the jet and go to the next race.
