Nate Newton - Miles Austin is the Demarcus Ware of the Offense

Was listening to the radio coming back from break and I heard Nate Newton make this comment. He feels that the Kansas City Game was extremely important because Tony Romo gained a lot of confidence and he found an extremely capable receiver in Miles Austin.

Nate feels that Miles Austin allows you to do a lot more on Offense because Defenses will now devote more resources to him and that opens things up for everyone else.

A co-worker last week asked me why I was so optimistic and I told him because of Miles Austin.

I don't think he is more important than Tony Romo, but I felt that he is the 2nd most important player based on a lot of what Nate Newton said.

Thoughts?

I think if you look at our offense the first few games of the season and then look at it since the KC game you can clearly see the impact Miles has made. Having a threat to go deep against defenses makes them play differently, plain and simple.

Jerry said in the off-season that he felt Miles Austin could provide the same impact in the deep passing game that TO did. A lot of people scoffed...at the time.

Great recollection. However, you forgot, our fans know waaaaay more about football then Jerry.

I didn't question what Jerry said because Romo has been sold on Miles for quite some time.

It seems like yesterday when some here were ready to run Miles out of town. So is the fallacy of snap judgments.

A separate thought but I didn't want to start a thread on it without having an answer:

What are the all-time records for undrafted QB-WR combos for one season, in yards, completions, YPC, and TD's?

Good question. You may want to start a thread with it because I'd bet money guys like Thumper and Adamjt13 will have the answer.

actually Austin had a big catch against Tampa too, imo Romo had confidence in Austin all season, even before he was starting.

I was one of them. I'll eat my crow. No problem. But, you have to admit, claiming that a guy who had been with the team for 3 years (to that point) and had made his only distinction as being the guy who couldn't get out of the training room was going to match or surpass the out put of a guy who put up 38 TDs in 3 years and is ceratinly a HOFer (if you go by statistics alone) it's going to raise an eyebrow or two.

Before you go heaping God-like praise on Jerry, keep in mind that Jery pimps EVERY SINGLE MOVE he ever makes regarding the Cowboys. For every 1 Miles Austin there's 15 Duane Goodriches whom Jerry believes will get the job done. Also, keep in mind that it took an injury to Williams to even see this "production" that Jerry had in mind all off-season. It's panned out, so far and I love it. But, if that was the plan all along, why wasn't Austin starting ahead of Crayton to begin with? It looks good for Jerry because it's working, but let's not all of a sudden paint him as a genius because an injury forced a contingency plan.

He's awesome. One of the hardest, most crisp route runners I've ever seen.

I know it hurts. :laugh2: However, it will be ok, just enjoy the ride, I am sure that Jerry will give you something else to be mad about.

His route running has improved a lot. His slant fake on that slant-and-go was a thing of beauty.
I would love to see a .gif of it.

Romo and Austin was owning it up in Pre-Season for a couple years it seemed like... Glad to see them both bring there chemistry to the real deal! Miles smile just makes you want to like him ..you can see so much heart while he plays, which is rare these days!!!

Miles drew double coverage in the Eagles game, and the Eagles had a safety coming over to help when it was apparent Romo was going to throw to Miles, and he still was able to not only catch the ball, but to dodge the first tackle, and then change direction and outrace three defenders for the go ahead score.

You can bet the Packers will be looking at that play over and over this week. Now the question is, can Williams continue to capitalize on the single coverage? If Miles and Roy can both take the defenders deep, Crayton, Witten, Bennett, and a RB are all going to get their chances underneath. That was sort of the plan in Philly, but I think it will work a lot better during the next three games.

And also keep in mind that Jerry didn't "find" Austin.

I am not a huge fan of the version of Parcells that was here, but a lot of really good, low-rounders, FAs and UDFAs came on board during his regime.

Romo, Ratliff, Crayton, and Columbo, in addition to Austin, are the ones who immediately come to mind.

I'll give Jerry his props for whatever role he played in keeping Austin around. And for his supposed push to get Ogletree on the field.

Sure makes everyone forget Isiah Stanback, don't it?

I think Parcells should also be given credit for Gurode's development. Remember, when we had what's his name as our starting center but Parcells worked hard on Gurode who had the physical talent but didn't have his head in the game. Still believe we cut the undrafted kid who then got signed by Tampa cause Parcells believed if he were out of town, Gurode would settle down and become the center Parcells believed he could be.

You mean how Gurode was drafted before Parcells was brought in... and how Parcells went out and drafted another 2nd round center in Al Johnson, tried moving Gurode to OG, but it failed... and nearly ruined Gurode in the process.

I can't think of any prolific undrafted WR's that played with the typical undrafted QB's you think of--Moon and Warner. Unless I'm missing a really obvious one (highly possible), Romo-Austin have got to be pretty close to the single season TD record for an undrafted combo.

If Jerry has become a great talent evaluator then we are are the luckiest fans in the league.
